Softball Lose Twice on Walk-Offs

In one of the most frustrating days of the season, the Louisiana College softball team suffered not one but two walk-off losses to Hardin-Simmons University. The Wildcats held late leads in both games but could not close things out as HSU won 12-11 in eight innings in game one and 9-8 in regulation of game two. The Wildcats will take a step out of conference play next weekend as they host UT Tyler for a three game series at Wildcat Park.

Game One

The Wildcats would take the lead in the first inning after Shelby Bergeron walked and stole two bases before coming home on a base hit from Abby Sterling. They would add to their lead in the second after the first three batters of the inning would reach base and all come home on a Bergeron double to make it 4-0 Wildcats.

The Cowgirls would cut the lead down to one in the bottom of the inning where the score remained until the fourth. Another bases loaded hit, this one from Sterling, added two runs to make it 6-3 LC and an error later in the inning put the Wildcats up 7-3 as Alyssa Ross came in to score on the play. HSU would get both of those runs back immediately though with a double and RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning.

They tied the game at seven in the fifth, which LC answered with a 2-run single from Samantha Cetta in the top of the sixth. HSU got a pair of 2-out hits in the bottom of the inning to knot things at nine and eventually send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth Briley Johnston drew a leadoff walk and scored to put the Wildcats up on a 2-out double from Maicey Spillers. Ross gave LC an insurance run on a base hit to third, giving LC the 11-9 lead going into the bottom of the inning. A base hit and two errors loaded the bases for the Cowgirls. Back-to-back base hits would bring in the three runs HSU would need to win the game and even series at one game each.

Game Two

After a scoreless first, the Wildcats took the early lead once again on an error at short that allowed Desiree Squires to score and an RBI groundout from Cetta to put LC up 2-0. It would be 2-1 after the second inning as HSU got a 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the frame.

The Wildcats quickly put some distance between themselves and the Cowgirls in the top of the third with four more runs on three hits and a pair of errors. Bergeron would score on a steal, Ross came in on an error in right, Squires on an error at third, and Shaye Tredinich scored on a wild pitch and LC led 6-1 after three innings.

The score stayed where it was until the fifth inning when HSU got one run on an RBI single to center. They would get within two of the Wildcats in the sixth on a throwing error and an RBI groundout. LC pushed their lead back to four on another HSU error and a fielder's choice RBI making it 8-4 Wildcats going into the bottom of the seventh.

Three straight singles loaded the bases before the first out on a strikeout. A single to right allowed two runs to come in and a third on an error making it an 8-7 game. Another error at third and a walk loaded the bases once again, with the winning run at second base. A ball to third and a third error of the inning and ninth of the game allowed two runs to score and give Hardin-Simmons the series win.
