Softball Takes First Game at HSU

Louisiana College softball began a three game series in Abilene, Texas on Friday afternoon with a single game against Hardin-Simmons University. The Lady Wildcats jumped on the Cowgirls early and put them away late despite some HSU threats along the way as LC got the 8-3 game one win. The teams will wrap up their three game set with a doubleheader starting at 11 am Saturday.

Shelby Bergeron started the game with a triple down the left field line which was followed by a bunt single from Alyssa Ross. Bergeron would come home on a designed delayed steal and then Abby Sterling would bring herself and Ross in on her sixth long ball of the season to make it 3-0 Wildcats after a half inning of play.

HSU got one run back in the bottom of the inning after a double and a base hit in consecutive at-bats but the Wildcats would retake their three run lead immediately in the second. Briley Johnston would leadoff the second with a triple and score on an error in right off the bat of Samantha Cetta making it 4-1.

HSU started the third with three straight hits with the final a double to left center that plated a run and put runners at second and third with no out. LC starter Sarah Gartman would settle in the inning and get the next two batters on easy ground balls before loading the bases on a walk. A big 3-2 strikeout would end the inning with only the one run coming in to score.

The Wildcats would have their second crooked number inning in the fourth when Bre Newman came in to score on an error at short and a ball by Abby Sterling that ended as a fielder's choice RBI, also allowed Bergeron to score on the throwing error by the second baseman making it 7-2 Wildcats after four innings. Cetta would single in another run in the fifth on a base hit to right to put plenty of distance between themselves and the Cowgirls.

A double and a single in the seventh plated HSU's final run but they would quickly run out of outs as Gartman got an easy pop up to short and a strikeout to end the game. The complete game would be the 10thwin of the season for the freshman who gave up three runs scattering nine hit with nine strikeouts.

The teams will play the last two games of their series on Saturday starting at 11am. Stay connected to Louisiana College softball by following @LC_sftball on Twitter. For general athletics news follow @LC_Wildcats on Twitter or like Louisiana College Wildcats on Facebook.
