Wildcats Win Third Straight ASC Series

Louisiana College baseball wrapped up their three game series in Longview on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats would have their 15-game winning streak snapped in the 5-3 loss in game one but responded with their 20thwin of the year in a 10-3 game two victory. The Wildcats take on Centenary next Wednesday at Billy Allgood Field live on Cox Sports Television.

Game One

Just as they did in the series opener on Thursday the Wildcats got out to a quick start offensively. Brady Atkins singled up the middle then moved to second on a wild pitch before being brought home on a base hit from Keelyn Johnson. The next run would score on a Dane Pedersen sacrifice fly and a third on an RBI single from Deauton Delgado. After the first half inning of play the Wildcats had a 3-0 lead.

That lead would disappear in the bottom of the second though as two free passes and a base hit would load the bases for the Jackets with only one away. A sacrifice fly plated a run but gave the Cats two outs and the chance to escape further damage. LETU would get the clutch 2-out hit though to plate two more runs and tie the game at three after two innings of play.

The score would remain locked at three for the next three innings as only two hits would be recorded during that time from both of the teams. The Wildcats got runners to second and third in the top of the sixth with 2-out without the benefit of a hit, but the clutch hit would not come for the Cats as the runners would be left stranded there, a key play in the ball game.

The Jackets would take advantage of the Wildcats missed chance immediately in the bottom of the inning. After two strikeouts to start the innings, starting pitcher Delgado would give up a base hit through the left side before giving way to Phillip Vidrine out of the bullpen. A double would score the runs from first and another single through the left side added another to give LETU the 5-3 lead with one at-bat left for the Wildcats.

LC would go down in order in the seventh and for the first time since March 1, come up on the losing end of a game. The loss snapped a program best 15 game winning streak and seven straight in ASC play.

Game Two

The theme of the series for the Wildcats was early runs and an early lead, and the Wildcats continued that trend in the series finale. Brady Atkins led off the game with a triple to right center and scored on a Christian Vandergrift base hit through the left side. After a Keelyn Johnson double, the Wildcats would go up 2-0 on a fielder's choice off the bat of Clayton Noakes. They made it 3-0 on a Dane Pedersen base hit to center and 4-0 as Dylan Keller brought in a run on an infield single.

LeTourneau cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second with a 2-run homer to left, but the Wildcat took those runs right back in the top of the third. Back-to-back doubles set the table for Keller to bring in two more on a base hit up the middle. The score remained 6-2 Wildcats over the next three innings as Jacob Buchanan and Konner McDermott combined to shut down the Jackets offense.

The Wildcats put the game away in the seventh inning with four more runs on three hits and a pair of LETU errors. With the two errors and back-to-back singles from Vandergrift and Johnson LC went ahead 10-2 after six and a half innings. LETU got their final run on a throwing error in the bottom of the inning but McDermott would retire the final nine batters he would face to pick up his fourth win of the year.

The win was the 20thof the season for the Wildcats, securing their third straight 20 win season. They picked up their 20thwin in their 26thoverall game, the fastest a team has reached that mark in program history. This is just the second time LC has had three straight 20-win seasons since joining the NCAA.

The Wildcats return to Billy Allgood field next week for four games including their annual Cats Crush Cancer game on Wednesday night against Centenary. The game will be broadcast live on CST and fans will have the opportunity to donate to local cancer research and treatment during the game.
