Softball Splits Friday Double with LeTourneau

Following two crazy wins on Monday, the Louisiana College softball team returned to American Southwest Conference play on Friday night with the first two games of their series with LeTourneau University. LC would split the day one doubleheader falling 6-5 in the first game but taking the 3-1 win in the second. The rubber game of the series will start at 12pm on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1

The first two innings moved by quickly with three 1-2-3 half innings of the four. An error in the third extended the Yellow Jacket third and LETU would make the Wildcats pay with back-to-back doubles that would score three unearned runs.

Abby Sterlin would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a double for the Wildcats and set the table for LC's first runs of the day. Pinch runner Kaylea Dearmon would score on a single to right and an error that allowed batter Maicey Spillers to advance to third on the play. She would come home two batters later on a Samantha Cetta base hit to right to cut into the LETU lead at 3-2 at the end of four.

LETU would get those two runs right back though in the top of the fifth on a double and a sacrifice fly to left. Desiree Squires would plate Shelby Bergeron in the bottom of the inning, but that would be all for LC as they still trailed 5-3 after five. LETU would get that run back in the sixth but the Wildcats cut back into the lead in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Briley Johnston. LC had the bases loaded in the inning but would only get the one run after a base running error at second on the sac fly.

The Wildcats got the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh after Squires doubled and came in to score on a Peyton Eschette base hit. That run though would remain at first base as Cetta flew out to left to end the game.

Game 2

Freshman Sarah Gartman would make her first start in two weeks in the second game of the day, after pitching the final three innings of game one. Shaking off a bit of rust, LETU would get a hit and an LC error that allowed their only run to score in the top of the first on an RBI groundout.

The Wildcats though would tie the game in the bottom of the inning using their aggressive base running skills. With Shelby Bergeron on second after a base hit and a steal, Sami Walters hit an infield single then took off for second trying to catch the defense napping. Walters was thrown out at second on a close play but allowed Bergeron to score to tie the game at one.

Gartman would settle into the game and only see potential run scoring opportunities for the Jackets in the third and sixth inning, but would get out of the jams with some quality pitching in the third, and a great defensive play from Alyssa Ross throwing a runner out at third on a base hit to right.

The bottom of the third would prove to be the difference in the game after a Desiree Squires double and Shaye Tredinich infield single, the Wildcats had runners at the corners with 1-out. Samantha Cetta would give the Cats the lead on a sacrifice fly to right to plate Squires, then a double from Kourtney Leblanc to center scored the insurance run from second to give the Cats the 3-1 lead after three.

The Wildcats threatened to extend their lead in both the fifth and sixth innings, but each time would leave runners on third base at the end of the frame. LETU would get the tying run on base after a base hit and an error at first, but Gartman would get the final two outs on a fly ball to left and an easy pop up to second.

The rubber game of the series will start at 12 pm at Wildcat Park on Saturday afternoon. Stay connected to Louisiana College softball by following @LC_sftball on Twitter. For general athletics news follow @LC_Wildcats on Twitter or like Louisiana College Wildcats on Facebook.
