Missed Chances Cost Cats Series

The Louisiana College softball played the final game of their three game home conference series against LeTourneau University on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Park. The Wildcats would leave 11 runners on base with multiple missed chances to score in the 5-4 extra inning loss to the Yellow Jackets. The Wildcats will travel to Hardin-Simmons next weekend for another ASC series.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with Shelby Bergeron doing Shelby Bergeron things with a leadoff single to left, steals of both second and third, and coming in to score on a wild pitch to put LC on top early. LC would extend their lead in the bottom of the second after loading the bases with one out, and Kourtney Leblanc earning the RBI as the pitch hit her on the left leg. They would leave three runners on base though and only get the one run in the inning, something that would come back to haunt them two innings later.

A leadoff walk and a base hit in the top of the fourth put the tying run on base. With one swing of the bat LeTourneau would take the lead as Hadyn Parker homered to left center to go up 3-2 and chase LC starter Madison Dykes. The Wildcats though would answer immediately as once again Bergeron provided the spark. With 2-out she would reach on a bunt base hit, stole second and went to third on an error. Sami Walters would bring her in this time on an infield single to tie the game at three.

LETU would go back on top in the sixth on a 2-out base hit to left, but once again the Cats responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Walters would single down the left field line then swipe second to get into scoring position. An Abby Sterling single to center would bring her home easily and knot the game again, this time at four each.

Neither team would provide any threat in the seventh sending the game to extra innings. Once again with 2-out in the inning the Jackets would get the needed hit that the Wildcats could not throughout the game. A single and an error in right allowed the go ahead run to score in the eighth and force the Wildcats to try and brew some more late inning dramatics.

The Wildcats would get both the tying and winning runs on base with the first two batters reaching on a walk and bunt single. Unfortunately, Walters was called out at the plate for being out of the box trying to lay down a bunt and Kamryn Jordan would ground into a game ending 5-3 double play to squelch the threat of the walk-off.
