Wildcats Win Two Crazy Games Over Hendrix

Following a disappointing ending to their three game series in Arkansas the Louisiana College softball team was back in action on Monday afternoon playing a pair against Hendrix College. The Wildcats would get the sweep of the Warriors after a 16-11 shootout win in game one and a five run seventh that ended with a walk-off double in game two for the 9-8 win.

Game 1

The Warriors came out swinging in the opener clubbing two home in the opening frame to take a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats would even come to the plate. While the Hendrix offense was on point, their defense left things to be desired as they committed three errors in the first inning leading to three LC run and a tie game after the first six outs were recorded.

Hendrix would take a momentary lead with a run in the second, but the Wildcats would rally for three more runs with 2-out in the second with an Abby Sterling double and a 2-run triple to right from freshman Maicey Spillers that made it 6-4 Wildcats after two. Sami Walters would make it 8-4 in the third with a 2-run triple of her own, also coming with 2-outs in the inning.

Both offenses would continue to pound the ball and find space in the green part of the field. The Wildcats added three more runs in the fifth on a Shelby Bergeron RBI single and a 2-run single from Sterling later in the frame, making it 11-6 after five innings.

Hendrix would cut the game to a one run affair with four runs in the sixth and seemed to have the momentum on their side, but the Wildcats quickly retook control in the bottom of the inning.

Two runs would come home on a Briley Johnston infield single with runners at second and third as the Warrior defense continued to struggle. Another throwing error later in the inning allowed the 14thrun to score for the Wildcats and a sacrifice fly from Sterling and wild pitch brought in two more making it 16-10 after six innings.

The Warriors got one back in the seven but reliever Kayelea Dearmon was able to come in and shut the door on any more potential runs to secure the crazy game one win.

Game 2

Hendrix picked up were they left off in the second game taking a 6-0 lead on the Wildcats after the first two innings of play. A solo home run in the third made it 7-0 Warriors with little to no offense showing for the Wildcats, the game seemed like it had already slipped away.

A walk and steal from Briley Johnston put her in scoring position for an RBI single from Shelby Bergeron to break the Hendrix shutout and put the Wildcats on the board. A triple and a base hit in the top of the fifth made it an 8-1 game with only three at-bats remaining for the Wildcats.

Bergeron would bring in another run in the bottom of the fifth with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt that scored Alyssa Ross from third with 2-out. The moment that seemed to spark the LC dugout came in the bottom of the sixth inning, after Cameron Crochet got another shutout inning to get the Wildcat offense back to the plate.

Sami Walters hit a single up the middle and then on the second pitch of the at-bat Abby Sterling launched her fifth home run of the season to left center to double the Cats total at make it an 8-4 ball game. After a pair of outs the Wildcats would load the bases but not get the clutch hit to add any more runs, but the momentum was squarely back in the Wildcats corner and they were seeing the ball much better out Warrior pitcher Savannah Draud.

Crochet got another shutout inning and Bergeron would lead off the bottom of the seventh with a stand up double, firing up the dugout in the process. A Walters base hit up the middle scored Bergeron from second and two batters in the Wildcats were one run closer to a massive comeback.

Walters ended up at third on her hit thanks to another Hendrix error and immediately scored on a bloop single to left from Sterling, making it an 8-6 game. The next batter, Maicey Spillers, would double in pinch runner Kourtney Leblanc and all of the sudden the Wildcats had the tying run on base with still no outs.

A pop up to short and a fly ball to right from the next two hitters made it two outs and appear as if Hendrix might escape with the win. Alyssa Ross would draw a key walk after a seven-pitch at-bat that put the winning run on first with plenty of speed. On the second pitch of her at-bat sophomore Briley Johnston pulled a double just over the head of the center fielder bringing Spillers and Ross in easily for the walk-off win, completing the 8-1 comeback win.

The Wildcats will return to American Southwest Conference play this weekend with a three game series at Wildcat Park against LeTourneau University.
