Late Inning Nightmare Costs Cats Sweep

A late-inning nightmare inning for the Louisiana College softball team would cost the Wildcats their second straight American Southwest Conference series sweep on Saturday afternoon. Leading 4-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats found themselves trailing 9-4 after the frame and went on to lose the finale to Ozarks 9-7.

The Wildcats seemed to be carrying their big win in game two on Friday into Saturday's affair as Desiree Squires put the Wildcats up early with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The momentum continued into the bottom of the inning as the Cats turned a rare 6-4-3 double play to end the first.

The next four innings flew by as neither team would get more than one hit in an at-bat and the game remained 1-0 on Squires' long ball from the start of the game. The Wildcats were finally able to break through with multiple hits in the sixth as Shelby Bergeron singled to start the inning then scored on a Squires double to make 2-0. Maicey Spillers would double in a run two batters later and Alysaa Ross would beat out an infield single to allow another run and LC was up 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth.

A single and a double started the frame for the Eagles and chased LC started Madison Dykes who threw 5.0 plus innings after a complete game win in game two Friday. Back-to-back walks gave Ozarks their first run and kept the bases loaded for a sacrifice fly and two straight singles that made it 4-3. Another base hit two batters later and an ensuing double put the Eagles 9-4 after an error allowed the runner to score on the same play.

The Wildcats would not go down without a fight as a Bergeron double put runners at second and third with no-out. Squires would bring both runners around on a base hit to right, but was thrown out trying to reach second base. That would prove costly as Abby Sterling hit her third homerun of the weekend but it would only count for one run making it 9-7 Ozarks. LC would get the tying run to the plate but would run out of outs and the Eagles would prevent the sweep with the final out.

LC will return to Wildcat Park on Monday afternoon for a doubleheader with Hendrix College starting at 1pm. Stay connected to Louisiana College softball by following @LC_sftball on Twitter. For general athletics news follow @LC_Wildcats on Twitter or like Louisiana College Wildcats on Facebook.
