Softball Sweep Friday Double at Ozarks

The Louisiana College softball team opened up their three game road conference series with the University of the Ozarks on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats would need some late dramatics to pull out the 4-3 win in game one, but some big hits in game two led them to an easy 12-2 win. The Wildcats will try to complete their second straight American Southwest Conference series sweep on Saturday afternoon at 12 pm.

Game 1

After a scoreless first the Wildcats would put together their first 2-out rally of the day in the second inning. An error at third allowed Sami Walters to reach base safely, then move to second on a steal, and third on a wild pitch. A double from Kourtney Leblanc brought Walters in and a triple from Shelby Bergeron plated Leblanc to put the Wildcats up 2-0 after two innings of play.

The Wildcats would add to their lead in the third on one swing of the bat as Abby Sterling demolished a pitch that easily cleared the left center field wall, putting LC up 3-0 going into the bottom of the inning. The lead would quickly diminish in the bottom of the frame as an LC error extended things and allowed two runs to score on a 2-out double two batters later.

The Wildcats could not get the clutch hits with runners in scoring position they needed in the fourth and fifth innings that would have giving them some breathing room over the Eagles. That would come back to hurt them as two hits and a walk loaded the bases with 2-outs for Ozarks in the bottom of the sixth. A second walk would tie the game at three before the final groundball out was recorded to send things to the seventh.

Back-to-back strikeouts to start the seventh inning seemed as if it would send the game to the bottom of the inning still tied at three. Desiree Squires though would find the gap in left center to put the go ahead run on base for Sterling to bring in on her 2-out double to left to put LC up 4-3.

The Eagles would get the tying run on with a leadoff single, and have reach second on a steal. That would be as far as she would make it as Cameron Crochet would get the next three batters in a row on a strikeout, fly ball to center, and ground out to complete the 4-3 LC victory. Crochet would get her second straight ASC complete game victory, scatting 10 hit and allowing just one earned run.

Game 2

The Wildcats got on the board early in the second game of the day sending eight batters to the plate to start the game. Shelby Bergeron singled to start the game then stole second and moved to third as the ball skipped into the outfield. She would come home as Briley Johnston reached on a fielder's choice. The Wildcats would load the bases after the next two batters reached, still with no out. Haley Vezinat would be hit by a pitch to earn an RBI the hard way, but the Wildcats would let the even bigger inning go by the wayside as the Eagles would escape with no more damage done.

After a scoreless second the Eagles would tie the game in the bottom of the third on a 2-run double to right center, but that would be all they would get in the inning as Madison Dykes continued to keep the batters off balance and allow the defense to work behind her.

The game was only tied for a few minutes as Maicey Spillers took the first pitch of the fourth inning over the center field wall, the first of her collegiate career. The score remained 3-2 Wildcats until the fifth inning when Abby Sterling would hit her second homer of the day, this one a 3-run shot to left center, that broke the game open and put the Wildcat sup 6-2 after five.

The three-run fifth would be the first of three straight innings for the Wildcats scoring three runs, as they pulled away from Ozarks in the final three trips to the plate. Desiree Squires hit an RBI double with Spillers and Alyssa Ross and RBI single in the sixth. In the seventh Johnston would double in a run, followed by an RBI groundout from Squires, and Johnston coming home on a wild pitch.

Dykes would get her second straight complete game with the last three outs in the seventh, going the full 7.0 innings allowing just the two runs on six hits with a strikeout. The Wildcats had four extra base hits in the game and combined to steal four bases in the big win.
