Big Innings Cost Wildcats Series

Louisiana College baseball opened American Southwest Conference play on Friday afternoon with a pair of games at Howard Payne University, a series originally scheduled for Pineville, but moved to Texas due to weather concerns. A late rally in game one cost LC in the 9-3 loss while a 5-run fifth broke open game two for HPU in route to a 9-2 doubleheader sweep. The Wildcats will try and salvage the series Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 12 p.m.

Game 1

The Wildcats got on the board early thanks to some early big hits from the top of the lineup. A leadoff walk to Brady Atkins put him on base for Christian Vandergrift's ringing double that plated Atkins from first just two batters into the game. Dan Pedersen added to the lead two batters later with a triple and it was 2-0 Wildcats early. A Howard Payne RBI double in the bottom of the inning cut the lead in half but the Cats still held the advantage.

The Jackets would take the lead in the third after a leadoff triple and base hit tied the game at two, then a sacrifice fly to center put them on top. After a quick fourth inning, Ashton Martin reached on a 1-out single up the middle and moved to third on a base hit from Atkins. Vandergrift's sac fly to center tied the game at three heading into the bottom of the inning.

The game turned against the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth with the first eight batters of the inning reaching base bringing five runs across the plate in the process with a mixture of singles, hit batters, and walks contributing to the Jackets' crocked number. HPU would score six runs on four hits in the inning and all but secure the 9-3 victory in game one.

Game 2

Howard Payne got the scoring started in the first with a pair of runs coming on a sacrifice fly and a dropped third strike that got away from the catcher. The Wildcats got on the board two innings later thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Dane Pedersen that scored Clayton Noakes from first base. HPU would get that run right back though in the bottom of the inning on a base hit to right to hold the 3-1 lead after three.

The Wildcats were still in the game despite being down 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but yet another big inning would end up costing the Wildcats the game. Three straight hits with runners in scoring position, including a 2-run double and 2-run single, gave the Jackets the 9-1 lead after the inning.

The Cats would scatter six hits over the next four trips to the plate, and push across one run on a Pedersen single in the seventh, but they couldn't string together enough key hits during the final few innings to try and cut into the HPU lead.

The Wildcats will finish their season opening ASC series on Saturday afternoon as they try and avoid the three-game sweep in Brownwood.
