Lady Wildcats Get 61-56 Win at Tyler

In their final regular season game of the year, a tune up for the upcoming American Southwest Conference tournament next week, the Louisiana College women picked up a quality 61-56 win over the University of Texas at Tyler. The Wildcats put together one of their most complete performances on both ends of the floor to pick up the road victory.

Things looked bleak for the Wildcats in the early goings as UTT went out 11-2 through the first five minutes of the game. A late three from Jayla Landrum and three more points from Kourtney McGhee made it a five-point game after the first quarter. The Cats would get within three early in the second after an and-1 chance from Alexis Lege was good at 21-18, but UTT would hold their lead the rest of the way as the teams finished with 13 points each in the second.

The turning point of the game came in the third quarter, sparked by another long ball from Landrum to start the scoring for the Wildcats. Tyler would make two three-point shots in the first two minutes of the third then go 0-for-their next 13 shots while turning the ball over five times. The Wildcats took advantage of the Patriots offensive woes and built a 12-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

The lead would be critical for the Wildcats as the shooting effort of the Patriots would return to normalcy. LC withstood the early flurry of points by answering with their own buckets on the other end and held a 60-50 lead with 4:36 remaining. A little cold stretch offensively from the Wildcats nearly cost them as UTT got within four with 30 seconds to go, but a key Janae Smith free throw with 21 seconds on the clock would be enough to keep the lead.

Only two players scored in double figures for LC with Kourtney McGhee putting in 10 along with eight rebounds and six assists. Jaleya Gold added 10 points of her own with Landrum and Smith each at nine in the game.

The Wildcats finish the regular season at 11-13 overall and 7-9 in ASC play, getting the fourth seed in the 2019 tournament. They will play host Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first round of the tournament next Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. Stay connected to Louisiana College women's basketball by following @LC_WBB on Twitter.
