Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | LC Sports Information - Brad Welborn

Cru Bounce Cats for Second Straight Year

For the second time this season the Louisiana College women's basketball team could not keep pace with the nationally ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Cru bounced the Wildcats from the tournament in the first round of the conference tournament for the second year in a row on Thursday night 76-54. The Wildcats finish the season with an 11-14 overall record.

The slow starts that have plagued the Wildcats all season was not a problem this time as the Cats played well from the beginning and a 6-0 run at the midway point of the first, five of six coming from freshman Jayla Landrum, put the Cats up 11-8 on the tournament hosts. The Cats though would go cold shooting at that point, making just one shot, a jumper from Janae Smith as time expired in the first, over the final five minutes of the quarter and trailed UMHB 19-13 after one.

The lack of offensive production would hurt the Wildcats even more in the second quarter as LC would go 1-for-17 from the floor in the second quarter and score just four points while the Cru put up 25 and put some distance between themselves and the upset minded Wildcats. The half ended with UMHB up 38-17, with the Wildcats needing a special performance in the second half in order to mount a comeback.

The LC offense would improve in the second half, but the lead that the Cru had built would prove to be too much to overcome despite their best efforts. The Cru had a 30-point lead by the end of the third quarter and would have not trouble closing out the final 10-minutes of the game to advance to the second round of the tournament.

Landrum recorded her first double-double of the season with a team-best 21 points and 13 rebounds. RyDeja McQuarn was the only other Wildcat to reach double figures with 10 points and Kourtney McGhee played her final game at LC with seven points, seven assists, and five rebounds.
