Cats Win 79-77 at Tyler

Louisiana College men's basketball completed one of their best regular seasons in school history on Saturday afternoon with an exciting 79-77 road win at the University of Texas at Tyler. The victory was the 19thof the year, tying the record for most wins in a single season during LC's NCAA era, and the most ever by a team with full NCAA membership.

The Wildcats were out quick on Saturday scoring the first seven points of the game, a three from Jaylen Rhone and a pair of shots from Kae'ron Baker. They would have as much as an eight point on a couple different occasions, the second coming after a Devon Washington layup with 10:22 left in the half. The Patriots though would finish the half with a 29-16 run that would give them the 42-37 lead at the break.

Like the fast start of the first half, the Wildcats quickly erased the UTT lead with a couple free throws from Washington and a trey from Baker within the first 70 seconds of the half. Tyler built their lead back to five but once again some clutch shooting kept things close as Bailey Hardy knocked down a long ball with 13:01 to go to make it a one-point game.

The lead would change hands nine times over the next 12 minutes of game time with two UTT free throws with 1:31 left putting them up 75-73. Just seconds after the second free throw, the best three-point shooter in the conference would strike again as Travis Schultz drilled a long ball to put the Cats back on top 76-75. Two Tyler turnovers and free throws from Queshod Young and Rhone gave LC a three-point advantage.

The Wildcats caught a break as a foul on a three-point shot sent the Patriots to the line with a chance to tie, but a missed third attempt, and missed layup after an offensive rebound kept the score the same, Washington picked up the second big rebound with four second left and made one of the ensuing free throw for the 79-77 final.

K.B. finished the game with 24 points and five rebounds, his eighth 20+ point game of the season. Schultz was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the game with 12 points, while Rhone and Washington each adding 11 of their own.

The Wildcats have a chance to make history next Thursday as they try to become the first team to win 20 games in a season since LC joined the NCAA in 2000. They will be up against the high-pressure Concordia team that ended the early-season winning streak. The first round game will tip-off at 5 p.m. from the UTD Athletic Complex.
