Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | LC Sports Information - Brad Welborn

Wildcats Fall 86-84 to Tornado

The Louisiana College men's basketball season came to an end Thursday night in a tough 86-84 loss at the hands of Concordia (TX) in the American Southwest Conference tournament. The Wildcats had the lead for the majority of the second half, but 45 free throw attempts by Concordia helped them to pull out the two-point victory to advance to the next round. The Wildcats' finish the year one-win shy of becoming the first 20-win team in LC's NCAA history.

The Tornado scored the first five points of the game but the Wildcats would bounce right back to take their first lead on a Jaylen Rhone runner in the lane. A Kae'ron Baker trey a few minutes later tied the game at nine as both teams settled into what the game would become. Baker seemed unstoppable during the first half as he went 6-for-10 from the field and made three big time shots from range in the half.

An 11-3 run by the Cats near the five-minute mark, capped off by a jumper and another three from Baker gave the Wildcats their biggest lead of the half at 31-23. CTX would answer right back however with back-to-back three's to make it 33-31 with three minutes to go. Two late free throws by the Tornado made it 36-34 at the break. Despite the lead at the break it was clear what would be the issue going into the second half, fouls. The Wildcats were called for 14 fouls in the first half sending Concordia to the line 21 times as opposed to only six trips to the line for LC in opening half.

The foul calls continued into the second half, but despite the whistles the Wildcats were able to build a nine-point lead on a couple different occasions. A jumper from K.D. Wallace established the first and then a few minutes later a pair of free throws from Queshod Young put the Cats up 59-49 with 11:49 to go. The Wildcats put Concordia into the bonus at the 13:45 mark and the double bonus with 12:36 left sending CTX to the line each time the rest of the way.

The biggest call was the fourth foul call against Baker with 15:13 left in the game, sending the Wildcats' second-best scorer to the bench for the next 10 minutes of game time. The Cats maintained their lead during that stretch but a 14-2 run by the Tornado put them on top for the first time since midway through the first half. Wallace tied the game at 79 on a jumper with less than two minutes to go but a miss on the other end gave the ball back to CTX with less than a minute forcing fouls to extend the game.

The Wildcats hopes were kept alive with some missed free throws from the Tornado but the offense couldn't find their shots late in the game. Denzel Austin made a late trey with nine seconds left but one free throw on the other end made it a four-point game and sealed the end of the Wildcats' season.

The Wildcats finish the season 19-7 overall, tying the record for most wins by a team in the NCAA era. The ASC all-division and all-conference awards will be released next week.
