Baseball Takes First Two from Roos

The Louisiana College baseball team returned to play on Saturday afternoon in the first of two doubleheaders with Austin College at Billy Allgood Field. There was plenty of offense to go around in both games but it was the Wildcats that would have the edge with wins of 17-12 and 14-8 over the visiting Roos. The teams will finish their quick four-game set Sunday afternoon with two more games starting at 1 p.m.

Game 1

The hits would come early and often for LC in the opener. After falling behind 1-0 on a solo home run in the first, the Wildcats went to work in the bottom of the inning with the first three batter reaching and Keelyn Johnson banging a double off the center field wall to tie the game. Clayton Noakes followed with a 2-run single to left and the Wildcats would bat around in the first scoring seven run on five hits to jump out to a 7-1 lead. The biggest hit of the inning came off the bat of Ty Morgan who belted a 3-run shot over the left center wall to cap the big opening inning.

The Cats added two more in the second on another Noakes RBI single, and a Dane Pedersen double, but Austin College would get in on the hit parade in the third. Five hits and four runs, all coming with 2-out made it a 9-5 game after three innings. The Wildcats weren't done with the crocked numbers though as they would have a big 2-out rally of their own in the fourth.

Morgan delivered again with an extra base hit, this time a double to left to score a pair, then after a throwing error extended the inning, a Brady Atkins single scored another and Christian Vandergrift's base hit up the middle added two more making it 14-5 Cats after four.

Austin College came right back with three of their own in the fifth, but the Cats got those back in the bottom of the inning on a 3-run opposite field bomb off the bat of Deauton Delgado, his first homer of the season. AC would score four more in the top of the sixth without making an out until a pitching change brought Gerald Groue out of the pen who fanned the next three batter to crush the rally. He would finish the game with three quick outs in the seventh to put an end to the game one shootout.

Game 2

Just like the first game of the day, the scoring started early as Christian Vandergrift deposited a ball over the right field fence to put the Cats up 1-0 after the first. LC would go up 3-0 in the second on a Brady Atkins 2-out, 2-run, bases loaded single up the middle. The Roos answered with two of their own in the next half inning scoring on an error and base hit to left.

The Wildcats had a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth when they would once again put up another big inning. Vandergrift got it started with a 2-run triple to right, which was followed by a 2-run homer from Keelyn Johnson making it 9-2 in two swings of the bat. Up 10-3 in the fifth, the Cats would get four more thanks to some fielding mistakes by the Roos. Back-to-back errors extended the inning and allowed four runs to score, the final two coming in off the bat of Brayden Miles on a seeing-eye single through the right side.

Austin College would not go down quiet, putting up five runs in the top of the sixth to make things much less comfortable for the Wildcats, due in part to three LC errors in the inning. Danny Wells would come in with 1-out in the inning and finish the game, picking up the win in the process. Two key defensive plays in the final five outs pushed the Cats over the top as a runner was cut down at the plate in a first-and-third situation an laser from Vandergrift in right to Noakes at third denied the extra base.

The Wildcats scored more than 10 runs for the fourth straight game and pounded out 26 hits on the day including four long balls, six doubles, and a triple. Both Konner McDermott and Danny Wells got their first wins of the season on the mound.
