Wildcats Fall to Eagles Again

The Louisiana College women wrapped up regular season play in the American Southwest Conference on Thursday night with an 83-72 loss to University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark. LC will take on UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon in their final game before the conference tournament begins next week.

The Wildcats trailed for the first five minutes of the game but a quick 8-2 run at the midway point of the first put them on top 10-8 with Jayla Landrum knocking down a trey and Kourtney McGhee putting the Cats up with a jumper second later. Ozarks though would answer with an 11-2 stretch that would give them a seven-point lead with a minute to go in the quarter. The Cats put up four late points to make it 19-16 UO after one.

McGhee was able to tie the game at 22 early in the second but Ozarks would put together a 17-6 run over then next five minutes of play to build a 39-28 lead near the end of the half. Turnovers and fouls plagued the Wildcats during the tail end of the second quarter, as Ozarks capitalized going 5-for-6 from the line in the final five minutes.

The Wildcats made an early push at the lead to start the second half with a 12-0 run at one point that put them on top 46-45 with Janae Smith pouring in the eight of the last 10 points of the run. Another Smith jumper a few minutes later gave LC a 50-47 lead but UO responded with nine straight to take the lead back, one they would not surrender the rest of the quarter or game.

The lead was at seven for much of the fourth quarter but a three from RyDeja McQuarn and a pair of free throws from Smith cut it to two points at 74-72 with just over two minutes left in the game. The Wildcats were unable to maintain the momentum as Ozarks put up 11 straight to end the game with LC going ice cold shooting going 0-for-4 from the floor and 0-for-2 from the line during the final two minutes.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures on the night with Smith leading the charge at 19 followed by McGhee's 16, the eighth straight double-digit scoring night for her and 14thin the last 15 games.

The Wildcats close the regular season at UT Tyler on Saturday before beginning preparation for the ASC tournament next weekend. The Wildcats are projected to face off with this year's host Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first round. Stay connected to Louisiana College women's basketball by following @LC_WBB on Twitter.
