Cru Too Much for Lady Wildcats

The Louisiana College women took on the #12 ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday afternoon to finish their first home weekend series of the season. The Cru jumped out to a big lead early, and despite their best efforts to pull closer, the Wildcats were not able to overcome the deficit, falling 96-67. The Wildcats next host the University of Texas at Tyler on Thursday January 10 at 5:50 p.m.

It didn't take long for the Cru to find their offensive rhythm in the game, jumping out to a 12-2 lead in less than four minutes of play in the opening quarter. A pair of late long balls, including a bank shot from near half court as the buzzer sounded, and UMHB had a commanding 27-9 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Wildcats though would still themselves and begin to work their way back into the game early in the second. Back-to-back trey's from Janae Smith and Tachiana Ledet sparked the Wildcats. An 8-0 run just moments later cut the deficit back to single digits at 33-25 on a jumper from Jayla Landrum with 4:38 left in the half. The Cru though would compose themselves after a timeout and score six straight points to push their lead back to 14.

The 44-34 halftime deficit for the Wildcats quickly grew as the Cru started the third with a 9-0 run and a 12-3 overall stretch through the first five minutes of the quarter. The Wildcats continued to battle the rest of the way but the 71-52 third quarter deficit was too much for the scrappy Cats to overcome against the undefeated Crusaders.

Senior Kourtney McGhee recorded her third 20-point game of the season to lead all scorers, half of which coming from the line on 10-of-11 shooting. Janae Smith played the entire 40 minutes of the contest adding 17 points and five rebounds. Jayla Landrum finished with 15 points for the Cats.

LC will continue a tough stretch of home games next week as they host UT Tyler on Thursday and Ozarks on Saturday afternoon at H.O. West Fieldhouse.
