Wildcats Win 3OT Thriller

In a three-overtime, instant classic, that almost wasn't, it was the Louisiana College men that would outlast the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 125-121 on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats let a 22-point second half lead slip through their fingers before the magic of H.O. West Fieldhouse revived LC's chances of coming away the victory. The Wildcats continue their four-game home stand next week with the University of Texas at Tyler on Thursday evening.

After their most lackluster performance of the season in Thursday's loss to Concordia, the Wildcats looked more like the team that came into the weekend on a 10-game winning streak. A three-ball from Denzel Austin at the 13:22 mark of the first half put the Wildcats ahead 15-8 and set the tone for the half and much of the second. The Cru worked their way into the lead four minutes later but there was no panic from the Wildcats. A 22-7 finish to the half from LC with a pair of three's from Austin and Kae'ron Baker gave the Wildcats the 45-31 lead at the break.

The second half turned into an absolute shoot out quickly. Both teams combined to make nine shots in a row over a span of two minutes of game time and 10-of-11 overall. The Wildcat offense would continue the hot streak with Austin knocking down another long ball with 14:08 left to give the Wildcats their biggest lead of the game at 70-48, but the game was far from over.

At the midway point of the second half LC led 77-56 after a layup from Trey Ames, the Cru would finish the half with a 37-16 stretch that would send the game into overtime tied at 93. UMHB took their first lead of the second half on a three from Shaq Martin with 39 seconds left in the game. The Wildcats would have the chance to win the game in regulation when Jaylen Rhone drove the basket and converted on an acrobatic layup, drawing a foul on the play, but also earning a technical foul on the celebration, giving the Cru two free throws on the other end. UMHB's Sam Moore made both shots to put them back on top and forcing Rhone to make his foul shot to tie the game. The free throw went in for the Wildcats and a miss from UMHB at the buzzer sent the game to overtime.

The Wildcats took the lead at 103-101 on a Baker layup with less than a minute to go in the first OT. A pair of Cru free throws seconds later tied the game again with both teams missing late three-point attempts that would have won the game. In the second OT a jumper from Devon Washington put LC up with 2:34 left, 90 seconds later, Travis Schultz drained a three from the left corner to put the Wildcats up 112-107 with one minute to go. A pair of LC turnovers however in the final 34 seconds gave the Cru a chance to come back, a chance they would take advantage of, tying the game on an and-1 chance with 19 seconds left.

The Cru went ahead by four in the third overtime on a Moore layup with 2:15 left, but LC would answer immediately with another Austin long ball to but it back to one. Rhone put them on top 30 seconds later with another layup and after a miss on the other end, hit a jumper with 17 seconds left. Devon Washington made a free throw 10 seconds later to secure the intense victory.

"Just absolutely speechless," Head Coach Reni Mason said. "After blowing a 20-point lead we had every reason to be down and fold our tent and feel sorry for ourselves. There's a price to pay when you're learning how to win and you saw that tonight.

"I have so much respect for UMHB and their coaching staff.  We knew those guys would not just go away. Kudos to our kids for never giving up. It was a great college basketball game on any level. We were very fortunate to win."
