Wildcats Overcome Slow Start to Win

The Louisiana College men picked up their 12thwin of the season on Thursday night, doubling their total from a season ago, by taking down the University of Texas at Tyler in comeback fashion 78-68. LC trailed by 17 late in the first quarter but stormed back to take the lead early in the second and pull away for the 10-point win. Next up the Wildcats will take on University of the Ozarks with a 3 p.m. tip-off Saturday afternoon.

Despite the break between last Saturday's marathon three overtime win over Mary Hardin-Baylor is seemed early as if the Wildcats were still feeling the effects of the big win. LC started the game 0-for-11 from the field as the Patriots went out to a 19-5 lead before a layup from Devon Washington found the bottom of the basket at the 12:03 mark of the first half. UTT had a 26-9 lead with 9:19 left in the half when the Wildcat offense finally began to find their stroke.

The Wildcats finished the half on a 22-8 run while holding UTT to just one converted field goal during the final nine minutes of the half. Back-to-back long balls from Lashard Powell and Bailey Hardy sparked the run with jumpers from Washington and Queshod Young with less than 90 seconds left cut the lead to single digits. Four points in the final 20 seconds from the Wildcats and LC only trailed 34-31 at the half.

UTT scored the opening basket of the second half but it was answered by a 13-0 LC run that gave them the lead for the first time in the game with Rhone's layup putting them up 44-36 at the 16.26 mark of the second. They would open their lead even further, reaching 11 on a couple different occasions. The Patriots would make their best push back into the game at the five minute mark, getting within six at 66-60, but a Denzel Austin three out of a timeout made the lead nine again and took the momentum away from UTT.

"Give UT-Tyler a lot of credit," Head Coach Reni Mason said. "They came out alive and prepared to play. We've got to get better at matching our opponent's energy at the beginning of games. I was very disappointed in our early approach. Yet we found a way to establish our tempo. The late run in the first half set the tone for the remainder of the night."

The Wildcats doubled their win total from a season ago and will play their first American Southwest Conference East contest on Saturday afternoon as they take on Ozarks at H.O. West at 3 p.m. Stay connected to Louisiana College men's basketball by following @LC_MBSK on Twitter.
