Comets Take the Rematch 83-76

The Louisiana College men took on UT Dallas for the second time in less than a week for the right to claim the top spot in the American Southwest Conference East Division. For the second straight time the game came down to the final minutes, only this time it would be the Comets that would come away with the victory, knocking off the Wildcats 83-76. LC will take on Belhaven University next Tuesday before playing their final two home games of the year on Thursday and Saturday.

In almost an exact replica of last week's affair, the first half was filled with defense as the two teams had to work for each possession and point. The Comets got an early six-point lead, their biggest of the half, but an 11-2 Wildcat run put them ahead 16-13 at the 11:43 mark of the first half.

The Comets came right back and took the lead, starting the seesaw lead changes that would be the story of the remainder of the first. Four late points from Devon Washington put LC up 30-28 with 90 seconds left, but UTD finished with four straight of their own to take the 32-30 lead into the break.

The Wildcats came out and took the lead back early in the second half with three quick buckets taking the lead less than two minutes into the half. LC held their lead, and even stretched it to as much as nine when Kae'ron Baker made three shots from deep on three straight Cat possessions, for more than 12 minutes of game time. A 10-1 Comet run though put UTD back on top with 5:30 left in the game.

A pair of free throws from Washington at the 1:21 mark made it a 74-73 game, with the Wildcats looking for a defensive stop to get the ball back to go for the lead. A Comet layup would fall through the net and a miss from deep that would have tied the game for the Cats made it a free throw shooting contest for the Comets. UTD went 7-for-8 from the line in the final 35 seconds to secure the win over the Wildcats.

The Comets went to the free throw line a total of 35 times in the game, converting on 29 of them, while LC was only granted 18 trips in the game, with six uncharacteristic misses. Washington and Baker each came away with more than 20 points in the game with Washington just missing a double-double with nine boards. Denzel Austin was the only other Wildcat in double figures getting 13 off the bench.

LC will travel to Belhaven for a rescheduled game from last Tuesday the host LeTourneau and ETBU next Thursday and Saturday in their final two home games of the season.
