Lady Wildcats Drop Home Opener to Tornado

After two months of road games the Louisiana College women played their first home game of the season on Thursday night as they hosted Concordia (TX) University in a return to American Southwest Conference play. The Wildcats were on the wrong end of a three-point shooting barrage by the Tornado with more than 70 percent of their shots coming from behind the arc, making just enough to squeak out the 72-70 win over LC. The four-game home stand will continue for the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon as they host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The Wildcats found themselves trailing 10-2 by the midway point of the first quarter after a pair of three's from the Tornado began the onslaught. Three more good shots from distance before the end of the period made it a 19-6 game after the first 10 minutes. Down by 10 with 5:39 left in the half, the Wildcat offense began to find their rhythm. A trey from RyDeja McQuarn sparked an 18-10 run that erased the double-digit lead and brought the Wildcats within a bucket with just under a minute to go in the half. But one final long ball from the Tornado with 19 seconds left made it a 38-33 game at the half. The Wildcats outscored CTX 27-19 in the quarter but still trailed.

Three's continued to rain from the Concordia offense in the second half but the Wildcats would do everything in their power to keep pace from inside in the arc. LC got within three points at 47-44 following a quick 5-0 run with Janae Smith converting on an and-1 chance with 3:10 left in the third. Two more long balls from Concordia before the end of the period kept LC at bay and made it a 53-47 game heading into the fourth.

A 9-3 stretch by the Wildcats out of the gate in the fourth tied the game at 56 with McQuarn knocking down a long ball of her own dishing a nice bounce pass to Alexis Lege underneath setting up the game tying layup. A pair of three's from Concordia put them right back up by six and then another with 2:15 left made it a 70-61 game. Wildcats senior Kourtney McGhee put the team on her back over the next minute scoring seven straight points to get LC back within a basket at 70-68 with 53 second to go.

A well designed play by Concordia led to a key layup to make it a four point game and after a pair of free throws from McGhee to cut it back to two, the Wildcats forced a turnover to get the ball back down by a pair. The Wildcats had two chances around the basket to tie the game with less than 10 seconds to go but could not get either attempt to find the bottom of the net with the final buzzer sounding.

McGhee turned in one of her best performances of the year, missing a triple-double but one assist with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and nine helpers. Four other Wildcats finished in double digits with McQuarn and Lege leading the way with 14 points each.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they take on top team in the ASC, Mary Hardin-Baylor.
