Wildcats Suffer Loss to Comets

The Louisiana College women took on their third nationally ranked American Southwest Conference opponent since the beginning of January on Saturday afternoon in UT Dallas. Unfortunately for the Wildcats the outcome would be the same as the two previous games as the Comets went home with the 78-57 road win. The Wildcats begin the second half of the ASC East schedule on Tuesday with a trip to Belhaven before taking on the Comets again next Thursday.

The Dallas offense came out clicking on all cylinders, mostly from the play of Victoria Pena who knocked scored 14 points in the first quarter and led the Comets to a 27-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. The early offensive struggles continued for LC, compounding the hot start by the Comets. The Wildcats made two of their first four field goals in the first quarter but went more than 16 minutes of game time before making another shot from the floor, a Janae Smith layup with 48 seconds left in the half.

The Wildcat defense helped keep the game from being a complete blowout in the first quarter, as they limited UTD to just 12 second quarter points, but the big first had the Comets with a 39-17 lead at the break.

The Wildcats battled hard with the Comets through the entire second half, outscoring them 40-39 over the two quarters, but the lead was too great for LC to erase. The Cats finished the game on an 11-2 run, showing the grit that has become associated with the program over the years.

The three senior guards finished each finished the game in double figures, with RyDeja McQuarn leading the way with 16 points. Kourtney McGhee added 12 while Smith ended with 11 and seven rebounds.

The Wildcats travel to Belhaven on Tuesday evening before another date with UTD on Thursday in Richardson, Texas.
