Wildcats Win Battle with Comets

After the best team field goal shooting performance in the Louisiana College men's basketball NCAA era on Tuesday night, the Wildcats turned in their most complete performance of the season on Saturday in the 77-73 victory over UT Dallas. A late push by the Wildcats and some clutch free throws pushed LC over the top in the important win over the Comets, moving the Wildcats back into the top spot in the stacked ASC East race. The Wildcats take on Belhaven again Tuesday night before another date with UTD then Thursday in Texas.

Saturday's game featured a matchup of the two best defenses in the conference and the first half bore that out in spades. Each team had to fight tooth-and-nail for every shot, often times taking their attempts with less than 10 seconds on the shot clock. Tied at 19 at the midway point of the first half the Wildcats would embark on an 8-2 run that gave them their biggest lead of the half at 27-21. Three straight layups from big man Devon Washington and a nice finish from Jaylen Rhone put LC up six with 6:11 left.

The Cats held their six-point edge until a 12-0 run by the Comets with just over four minutes left carried them near the end of the half. A key three-pointer from Jacquez Coleman with six seconds left in the first cut the lead in half and made it a 35-32 Comet lead at the break.

Two quick buckets to start the second gave the Comets their biggest lead of the game, 40-32 a minute into the second. An early timeout settled the Wildcats and they responded with a 9-2 run that made it a one-possession game once again. The lead would never be more than four points by either team for more than 14 minutes of game time as the team battled and traded baskets and defensive stops.

A total of nine lead changes took place during the middle part of the second half until the Wildcats found the resilience they have been looking for late in games most of the season. Up by two with 2:33 to go, an dime from Timothy Stokes set up a wide-open Travis Schultz for a critical three that gave LC a five-point lead at the time, and finally ignited the home LC crowd.

A stop on the other end a Washington layup put LC up seven with just over a minute remaining. Despite the best efforts of the talented Dallas team, who were able, with some stellar defense of their own, make it a two-point game with 41 seconds left, the Wildcats had ice in their veins from the free throw line. Kae'ron Baker and Trey Ames each made a pair of shots from the line that would secure the huge home win for the Wildcats.

K.B. would finish the game with 21 points along with six assists while Washington turned in his ninth double-double of the season with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Travis Schultz added 16 of his own with a 4-of-7 performance from beyond the arc.

"Very proud of the effort by our team today and the energy the crowd provided," Head Coach Reni Mason said. "This was a good win that we can only enjoy today. We still have work to do and have to start preparation for Belhaven on Tuesday."

The Wildcats take on the Blazers for the second time in a week's time and then have another key matchup with UTD next Thursday.
