Wildcats Rout Blazers with Record Shooting Night

After a tough road trip into East Texas the Louisiana College men responded in a major way on Tuesday night with a 112-72 second-half rout of visiting Belhaven University. LC outscored Belhaven 61-21 in the second half, turning the game on end with a 78 percent shooting performance in the half and a 70 percent clip for the game, setting a new team record for shooting in LC's NCAA era. The Wildcats play a pivotal conference game Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. against UT Dallas at H.O. West Fieldhouse.

From the outset of the game both LC and Belhaven were shooting the lights out of the gym. The first four combined attempts of the game went through the basket and set the stage for a quintessential first-half shootout. An 8-0 run by the Blazers gave them a 23-13 lead at the 13:33 mark of the first, but after a Wildcat timeout, LC came storming back with eight straight including a pair of trey's from Denzel Austin and Jaylen Rhone.

The Wildcats but it to a one-point game at the nine-minute mark than took the lead on an Austin layup moments later. The Blazers would answer right back and keep the shootout raging. The lead changed hands five times in the final three minutes of the half before a free throw from BU tied the game at 51 at the end of the half. Through the first 20 minutes of play both teams were shooting better than 60 percent from the field and 70 percent from beyond the arc, each better clips than their trips to the free throw line in the half.

The barrage would continue in the second half, but only for the home team as the Wildcats continued to make shot after shot, while Belhaven went ice cold. LC went 11-for-11 from the floor to start the second half and turned a tie game into a 20-point lead in a matter of seven minutes of game time. During that same stretch Belhaven went 1-for-11 from the field, scoring just four total points.

LC shot a ridiculous 22-for-28 in the second half and continued to knock down shots from distance with a 9-of-12 clip from beyond the arc. Twenty defensive rebounds and eight forced turnovers kept the pressure on the Blazers that led them to a 5-for-30 second half shooting percentage.

Six Wildcats finished the game in double figures with Devon Washington leading the way with 17 points. LC got 74 bench points in the game including a 16 point outing from Jacquez Coleman who played 13 minutes in the second and went 5-for-6 overall and 4-of-5 from range in that time.

The 70.5 percent field goal performance is the best shooting by a team since LC joined the NCAA in the year 2000, and the 75.0 percent mark from three is the second best single-game performance in that category.

The Wildcats host UT Dallas in a crucial ASC contest this Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a matchup of two of the three teams tied atop the East standings.
