Lady Wildcats Escape with Win

The Louisiana College women returned to H.O. West Fieldhouse on Tuesday in an American Southwest Conference game against Belhaven University. In a tightly contested game throughout, the Wildcats escaped with a 63-62 win as a Blazer layup at the buzzer missed the mark giving the Wildcats their second straight ASC win, and first at home this season. The Wildcats will take on UT Dallas on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

As has been an Achilles' heel for the LC women all year, the Wildcats once again got off to a slow start on Tuesday falling behind 15-3 through the first five and a half minutes of the game. The last four minutes of the quarter belonged to the Wildcats as they finished the quarter on an 11-0 run with Jayla Landrum draining a three near the quarter's end to make it a 15-14 game.

The back-and-forth play continued the entirety of the second and third quarters. It was another lat run by the Wildcats in the second, ending with a 7-0 run compliments of a pair of free throws and a trey from Morgan Blades to make it a 32-31 Blazer lead at the half. It took more than five minutes for Belhaven to find a basket in the third quarter, but the Wildcats could not pull away during that stretch only scoring six points to go up 37-32 at the midway point.

The Blazers held the slim 46-44 lead heading into the final quarter. A clutch three-pointer from Landrum with 5:24 to go brought the Wildcats within a point and started a 12-2 run that would see them go up 62-56 with 1:47 left in the game. Still with the lead and less than a minute to go, the Wildcats had a chance to cement the win at the free throw line, but a 1-for-6 performance in the final 40 seconds gave the Blazers the chance they needed.

A Blazer layup with two seconds left brought the game within a point, which was followed by a quick foul and two missed LC free throws that gave the ball back to Belhaven with a chance to win it at the buzzer. A well-designed inbound play gave BU guard Aaliyaha Thornton a clean look at the basket but her point-blank layup missed the mark and the Wildcats would escape with the win.

Freshman Jayla Landrum just missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds while Kourtney McGhee turned in yet another double digit game with 15. Three other players flirted with double figures on the night with Shardae Melancon and Blades providing nine points each off the bench.
