Lady Wildcats Get 73-67 Win at LeTourneau

The Louisiana College women were able to return to the win column on Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 73-67 victory on the road at LeTourneau University. A near perfect effort from the free throw line late in the game helped the Wildcats secure their first win since the calendar changed to 2019. The Wildcats will try and make it two in a row on next Tuesday as they host Belhaven University at H.O. West Fieldhouse.

After a slow start to the game from both teams, the Wildcats were able to find some offensive rhythm midway through the first quarter. Morgan Blades converted on three free throws after drawing a foul, and Janae Smith knocked down a shot from distance and LC had a 12-4 lead six minutes into the game. There were only four combined points scored the rest of the quarter but the Wildcats had a 14-6 lead after the first.

The eight-point lead would come in handy for the Wildcats as LeTourneau responded in a big way to the early offensive struggles. An 11-0 run early in the second put the Jackets up 23-19, but LC would find a 9-2 answer that gave them the lead right back at 28-25 with 2:34 remaining. A layup and free throw from RyDeja McQuarn and a jumper from Kourtney McGhee as time expired put LC up 33-30 at the half.

The back-and-forth third quarter saw a total of three ties and nine lead changes during the 10-minuted period. A LETU free throw with 37 second left in the quarter tied the game at 52 setting up an exciting finish to the game.

The Wildcats did their best to put the game to bed early in the fourth by scoring 13 straight points after LeTourneau made the opening basket on the quarter. LC had a 65-54 lead with 3:24 left in the game, but the Jackets would not give in. Trailing by six with less than a minute to go, LETU made back-to-back three's, that if not countered by excellent free throw shooting from the Wildcats, would have given them the lead. Smith, McGhee, and Jayla Landrum each made two free throws in the final 30 seconds of the game that secured the road win for the Wildcats.

Smith led the Wildcats with 17 points in the game while Landrum just missed her first career double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

The Wildcats return home for another conference matchup on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. as they host Belhaven at H.O. West Fieldhouse.
