The Louisiana College Wildcats traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face the Crusaders of William Carey University in a non-conference match.
The Cats avoided the rain but could not weather the Crusader attack and substitute Pablo Vasquez's four goals.
The Cats held the Crusaders scoreless for the first thirty-plus minutes, but it was all WCU. Coming off the bench, moments before, Vasquez headed in Joaquin Cabello's cross in the 37th minute for the first score.
In a span of seven minutes, two more Vasquez goals would come and a Johnny Buckle score to finish out the first 45 minutes 4-0.
The second half started better for LC, recording their first shots in the game.
Leo Osawa's 49th-minute shot was kept out by Adrian Cabado, who came on at the half.
A shot by
Leo Urumovski moments later gave the impression that LC could come back, but minutes later the Crusaders added to their lead.
Matias Pazos scored in the 53rd minute while Vasquez tallied his fourth in the 60th minute.
It was a war of nutrition, WCU did not save any fresh legs playing 27 players compared to LC's 16, outlasting the Cats until the 90th minute. With something left in the tired legs of LC, one more chance was created in last remaining minutes of the game.
Alex Okuma's blocked shot led to the Wildcats' only corner of the game in the 82nd minute. Sending numbers forward into the box, Jay Pino took the corner but did not find an LC player. His corner kick was cleared away as far as
Ian Carter, but his shot was also blocked just outside the 18 yard box ending the attack.
The Cats could not hold on any longer. The determined Crusaders scored three more times in the remaining minutes to close the game 9-0.
The Cats will again be on the road this upcoming week to face the Warriors of Hendrix College for a non-conference match-up in Conway, Ark. Then on Saturday, travel to Jackson, Miss. to start conference play against the Blazers of Belhaven University.
