Lady Wildcats Split Crossover Day One

Louisiana College vs Howard Payne

For the second match in a row the Louisiana College volleyball walked off the floor winners. It took a tremendous battle that went the full five sets, but the Wildcats were able to withstand to take down Howard Payne University Saturday afternoon 25-16, 25-22, 17-25, 16-25, 15-13.

Riding the momentum of their first home and conference win earlier in the week, the Lady Wildcats came out strong in their first match of the day against Howard Payne. A 6-0 run early in the first set that included kills from Paris Babino, Jaslyn Bright, and Mary Nichols and helped by three HPU errors put LC up 8-7. The Wildcats wouldn't look back from there extending their lead to as much as five on a few different occasions. With the score 20-16, the Wildcats put the set away with five straight points, four of which coming on kills from Bright and Paola Salas Adorno to take the first 25-16.

The second set played out much like the first only with the score lines a bit closer together. Down by one at 21-20, the Wildcats found the killer instinct they needed and not let the set slip away from them. Three kills from Adorno in the final few attempts and another by Niajia Huval gave LC the edge they needed to go ahead two sets to none.

Howard Payne however would not go down without a fight, rallying to win the next two sets in a row with relative ease 25-17 and 25-16. It was the run the Wildcats put together at the end of the fourth set that gave them the edge they needed in the fifth. The 7-0 run made the third a closer score than the set indicated but the Wildcats carried their momentum to the fifth set win.

The Wildcats scored the first five points of the set on two kills from Bright and and ace and kill form Adorno with a block from Bright and Sadi Jones as well. HPU came back but the Wildcats led 8-7 at the turn. LC pushed their advantage to 13-10 with another kill from Adorno and an ace from Babino before HPU got within a point at 14-13 forcing a second match point for LC. After the serve from Howard Payne Babino laid a perfect ball up for Sadi Jones to slam to the floor to give the Wildcats their second conference win in as many matches.

Louisiana College vs Concordia

The second match of the day for the Wildcats did not go as they had hoped it would as they squared off against conference foe Concordia University. The Tornado took the match in straight sets 25-16, 25-23, 25-19 to close the first day of the crossover event.

It would be an 8-0 run by Concordia that would tell the tale of the first set with five LC errors adding to the run before a timeout refocused the Wildcats. The seven-point advantage CTX built during that stretch would be too much for the Wildcats to come back from despite getting a little help from some Tornado errors late in the set.

The Wildcats reset themselves for the second set and played much more like what they had been showing over the previous two matches. A kill and an ace by Sadi Jones tied the set at nine before a kill from Paris Babino put LC on top 10-9. CTX would take the lead right back and push it to as much as 22-16 before the Wildcats found their rhythm again and made a run towards the end of the set. A couple of attack errors by the Tornado and a pair of kills from Paola Salas Adorno made it a two-point game at 22-20 with the momentum in the Wildcats favor. Another kill by Adorno got LC within a point but the set ended on an attack error on the next serve to give the Tornado the 2-0 match lead.

Like in the first set it was an early long run by Concordia that sealed the fate of the Wildcats. With the score at 4-3 the Tornado rattled off 10 straight points, nine of which came on kills by CTX, to take the commanding 14-3 lead. The Wildcats would answer with a run of their own getting the next six in a row thanks to some CTX miscues but despite the shift it would be Concordia that would hold on for the 25-19 set and match win in the third.

The Wildcats finish play in the first ASC crossover of the year Saturday afternoon taking on host Mary Hardin-Baylor at 2pm.
