The Louisiana College Wildcats began American Southwest Conference play in Jackson, Miss. against the Blazers of Belhaven University.
A second overtime header by
Evan Norwood secured LC's first three points in the conference.
The Blazers took the lead in the seventh minute after LC gave up a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Lalesh Hadji took the free-kick and cleverly shot the ball under the jumping wall of defenders giving
Evan Barker no chance to stop it.
The lead did not last long, in the 25th minute
Ian Carter dribbled to the touchline and drove a ball across goal pass two Blazer defenders where
Gabriel G. Lopes easily tapped it in for the tie.
Later in the 33rd minute,
Alex Okuma brilliantly played
Jay Pinto a cross-field pass through the Blazer defense, taking on a defender, and then nestling his shot past Thomas Blake for the second goal and the lead at 2-1.
The game was chippy in the second half, the Blazers became physical, trying to regain their lost lead.
The Cats were holding on but a foul inside the 18-yard box by a Wildcat defender in the 79th minute cost them. Belhaven had a penalty kick, Alejandro Forero stepped to the spot and blasted his shot past Barker to tie, 2-2.
A last-ditch effort by Belhaven in the dying moments of the 90 minutes came up short as the Cats dug in and defended for their lives.
For the second game in a row, the game would go to two ten minute overtime periods, with the next goal wins format.
Both sides only had one shot on goal in the first period,
Gabriel M. Lopes had the only one on frame, but Blake prevented winner.
LC did not want to leave with a draw; the second period was theirs to take. The Cats worked down the field and in the 110th minute,
Evan Norwood won the game. Jumping high for a crossed ball, he put his head to the ball and sent it to the back of the net. The LC bench cleared to celebrate Norwood's first goal of the season and possibly the season's most important.
ASC play continues Thursday, and Saturday as UT-Dallas and Howard Payne travel into town. Kickoff is at 7:30 and 3:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
