Wildcats Start Strong but Falter Late

The 2018 home and conference opener for the Louisiana College volleyball team started off with a lot of promise taking the first set convincingly 25-12 over LeTourneau University but the Yellow Jackets responded with enough to take the next three and win the match 3-1. The Wildcats will host East Texas Baptist University Saturday afternoon beginning at 2pm at H.O. West Fieldhouse in another conference dual.

The Wildcats started the night with one of their best set performances in the young history of the program. After winning the first four points of the set on kills from three different players, the Wildcats jumped out to a 10-5 lead. With the socre sitting at 16-11 in the Wildcats favor later in the set, it was the service of Sadi Jones that put the set firmly in LC's hands. After a kill by Jaslyn Bright and a trio of errors from LeTourneau, Jones had three straight aces to give the Wildcats set point at 24-11. Bright would give the Wildcats the set win two plays later as they took the first 25-12.

With the momentum against them, LeTourneau bounced back strong in the second set and took a commanding 13-2 lead over the Cats. Down by 10 later in the set, the Widlcats put together a run to cut the lead in half thanks to another set of LETU errors and kills from Mary Nichols and Bright, but the comeback would fall short in the second and the Jackets would even the match with a 25-16 set win.

The third set was much more evenly contested throughout with the Wildcats holding the early lead but LeTourneau coming back to take a 15-13 lead mid way through. The Wildcats were only able to produce one more kill the rest of the set, off the left hand of Jaslyn Bright, scoring their other three points thanks to LETU errors. The Jackets finished with a 6-1 run to take the third 25-17.

Much like the third, the fourth set was tightly contested throughout with things tied at 13 after another kill from Bright. But that was when things started slipping through the hands of the orange and blue as LeTourneau scored eight of the next 10 total points to go ahead 21-15 late. The Wildcats made a push near the end but the deficit was too much to overcome and LeTourneau won the fourth and the match with a 25-19 victory.

Jaslyn Bright finished with her fourth double-digit kill night of the season and Paris Babino added her third 30 plus assist night.

The Wildcats take on ASC rival ETBU on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at H.O. West Fieldhouse in their second of three straight home contests.
