Box Score

After a tough series last week and a long bus ride to West Texas, the Louisiana College softball team escaped the series opener at Sul Ross State University with a 1-0 win in extra innings. Savannah Settle threw another complete game and Kaitlyn Moore hit her first career home run for LC's only offense in the opener. The Wildcats and Lobos finish the three game set with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.

The Wildcats picked up hits in each of their first two trips to the plate but left runners in scoring position at second to end both the first and second innings. Both teams would threaten to score the game's first run with two hits in the third for Sul Ross and a pair for the Wildcats in the fifth, but each time the starting pitchers got out of the jams to keep the scoreless duel going.

The Wildcats picked up two more hits in the top of the seventh, the second of which from Haley Vezniat sent the go ahead run to third with 2-out. A fly ball to left stayed just barely in play enough for the catch to be made to end the innings and keep LC off the board once again. The Lobos answered with the exact same scenario in the bottom of the inning, but a spinning catch by Alyssa Ross in left ended the inning and sent the game into extras.

Kaitlyn Moore's first career home run would come at the perfect time for the Wildcats as she led off the eighth with the solo shot stunning the Lobos and elating the Wildcats. Settle gave up a 1-out base hit in the bottom of the inning, but retired the next two batters on an easy pop up to second and a strikeout to end the game and give the Wildcats the dramatic road victory.

Settle (12-7) threw her 14thcomplete game of the season, an 8.0 inning shutout allowing five hits with four strikeouts. Her eight innings also moved her into first all-time in Louisiana College softball history in innings pitched, passing Sandi Clark to claim the top spot.

Kaitlyn Moore and Samantha Cetta were the only Wildcats with multiple hits in the game, both getting a pair of hits, with Moore's home run the difference in the game.

The Wildcats and Lobos will finish the series with a doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Alpine, Texas.
