Box Score

It would be a tough day at the park for the Louisiana College softball team as they wrapped up their three game American Southwest Conference series with the visiting University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Bookend four-run innings by the Cru ended things in five innings with a 9-1 score. The Wildcats make their final road trip of the season next weekend for an ASC series at Sul Ross State University.

The Cru wasted no time in the top of the first getting their offense up and going. A leadoff single on the second pitch of the game started the rally and two batters later UMHB was ahead 2-0 after a home run over the centerfield wall. A pair of RBI singles later in the inning added more to their total, finishing with four runs on five hits in the first inning.

Following a pitching change for the top of the second, the Cru found another run courtesy of a 2-out base hit to left putting them up by five. The Wildcats though had prime chances to find their way right in the thick of things in the first two innings. Three straight batters reached in both instances to load the bases, but each time LC left them full, stranding six runners in just the first two innings of the game.

After a scoreless third the Wildcats were finally able to push across a run in the fourth on a sharp single to left from Haley Vezinat to bring Taylor Hammock in to score easily from second. Just as the Wildcats had some momentum however, the Cru came right back with their second, game deciding crooked number. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases with 1-out, which was followed by a walk, fielder's choice RBI, RBI groundout, and infield single, each plating a run and giving UMHB the run-rule lead on the Wildcats in the fifth.

LC had a chance to extend the game with runners reaching second and third with 2-out, but the key hit would not come as a fly ball to center ended the game. Savannah Settle took the loss for the Wildcats, going just 1.0 inning, giving up four runs on five hits. Haley Vezinat was the only Wildcats with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Five other Cats had hits in the game, including Mattie Stine who moved into third all-time in LC history in hits, passing both Stephanie Jaeger and Trista Helverson in this series.

LC will make the lengthy trip to Sul Ross next week in their final road series of the year, with both teams battling for the final tournament spot at the end of the season.
