Lady Wildcats Take Series over LeTourneau

3/10/2018 3:09:00 PM

Box Score

After a disappointing ending to the second game of Friday's doubleheader, the Louisiana College softball team responded quickly to take the three game series at LeTourneau University on Saturday afternoon. Two runs in the first set the stage for the LC offense that ended with 11 hits in the 8-2 series winning game, improving their conference record to 6-3 on the season. The Wildcats will play a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday night at Wildcat Park against in-state rival Centenary College beginning at 4 p.m.

The Wildcats rallied early in the first inning after the first two batters were retired on ground balls in the infield. A base hit, a walk, and a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position for Samantha Cetta. The sophomore transfer came through with her first key hit of the game, a 2-run single to right to put the Wildcats ahead 2-0 after a half inning of play.

LC starter Savannah Settle was dominant from the very beginning of the game retiring the first eight batters of the game in a row before allowing a harmless 2-out single in the bottom of the third. By the time LETU got their first hit of the game, they were already down by a score of 4-0. The Wildcats added to their first inning total with two more in the top of the third when Bria White tripled to right field bringing in Alyssa Ross and Kaitlyn Moore on the play.

Moore added to the Widlcats lead in the fifth with a 2-out single to left and then another RBI triple in the fifth, this time from Shelby Bergeron, her second of the weekend, made the score 6-0 Wildcats after four and a half innings. Cetta delivered her second clutch 2-out hit in the sixth to add to the Wildcat lead on an RBI double to left, then Hammock came in to score during the next at-bat on a wild pitch to put LC up 8-0 going into the bottom of the sixth.

LeTourneau had managed just one hit and one base runner against Settle through the first five innings of play, but were finally able to put a rally together in the sixth to stave of the run-rule loss. Back-to-back started the inning, and a wild pitch allowed a run to come in from third insuring the seventh inning would be played. They added another on a sacrifice fly to center but that would be all the Yellowjackets would manage as Settle retired the final sixS batters of the game in order to complete the win.

Samantha Cetta had a big day at the plate for the Wildcats, going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Both Kaitlyn Moore and Taylor Hammock were 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Moore added an RBI as well. Both Bria White and Shelby Bergeron had run scoring triples in the game as well. Savannah Settle (3-3) through her second complete game of the weekend allowing just two runs on three hits with five strikeouts.

The Wildcats will host Centenary on Tuesday afternoon at Wildcat Park for two games beginning at 4 p.m., then welcome Hardin-Simmons University for a three game American Southwest Conference series the following weekend.
