Softball....Finally Back on the Field

2/27/2018 11:51:00 AM

It has been over three weeks since the Louisiana College softball team began the season with two disappointing losses to Millsaps College, and they have been chomping at the bit to get back on the field. The Wildcats have had eight games postponed since the beginning of the season, including two open American Southwest Conference series against the University of Texas at Dallas and East Texas Baptist University. Fortunately all signs are pointing in the right direction for a regularly scheduled doubleheader to take place at Birmingham-Southern College on Tuesday evening beginning at 5 p.m.

The Panthers enter the midweek doubleheader with the Wildcats and will wrap up a seven game home stand where they are a 4-1 thus far, including winning two-of-three in their Southern Athletic Association opening series over Centre College. The one loss to the Colonels, in their final meeting, snapped an early season five game winning streak.

BSC is averaging 5.7 runs per game on the season and are hitting a solid .329 as a team. Junior infielder Savannah Lee leads the team with a .417 average this year with four of her 10 total hits leaving the yard and 13 RBI, tops on the team. The Panthers have six players that have played in all nine games this year that are batting over .300 on the season, including ace starting pitcher Haley Crumpton.

The junior southpaw was named the SAA Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 with a 0.48 ERA last week. She was the winning pitcher in their two wins over Centre and struck out 11 batters with no walks. Crumpton has a 5-0 record on the season with a 1.12 ERA with two complete games and 31.1 innings pitched. She has 23 strikeouts this year to only five total walks. Jessica Perley is the only other pitcher to start a game this year for BSC, with a 1-2 record in 17.2 innings of work, allowing 20 runs on 21 hits during that time.

The Wildcats did not play to their potential in the series opener at Millsaps at the beginning of February. Seven defensive errors in two games, combined with six total hits cost LC both games of the season opener series. That was more than two weeks ago, and the team has had time to work on many of the things that plagued them against the Majors.

Sophomore Sami Walters was the only Wildcats with more than one hit in the doubleheader with Millsaps, both of them going for extra bases on a double and a triple. Leadoff batter Shelby Bergeron had some good at-bats, drawing two walks, but only picked up one hit in the series, but was able to steal three bases. Catcher Haley Vezinat had the teams only RBI of the series, on a single up the middle late in game two.

In the circle for the Wildcats, both Savannah Settle and, making her LC pitching debut, Cameron Crochet threw more than 4.1 innings. Settle allowed seven runs total, but only two of them were earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts. Crochet made two relief appearances going a total of 4.1 innings allowed four runs, only two earned, on five hits.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play three games against the University of the Ozarks on Friday and Saturday to finally open ASC play at Wildcat Park. Stay connected to Louisiana College softball all season by following @LC_sftball on Twitter or liking Louisiana College Softball on Facebook.
