It has been over two weeks since the Louisiana College softball team began the season with two disappointing losses to Millsaps College, and they are chomping at the bit to get back on the field. The Wildcats are scheduled to open American Southwest Conference play this weekend with a three game series against the University of Texas at Dallas, weather permitting. The series is scheduled for a single game on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. and a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.

The Comets have not played a game since early in the month, and like the Wildcats suffered a doubleheader loss to begin their season. UTD lost a pair to conference opponent Mary Hardin-Baylor to begin the season on February 9. The Comets his .259 as a team in the two game series, scoring eight total runs. Hope Griffin led the team with a 3-for-5 series, that included a double and three RBI. Emily Schroeder was 4-for-6 in the series with three runs scored a double and and a homerun with just the one RBI.

The Comets used four different pitchers in the two games, only one of them throwing more than 4.0 innings. Blaire Evans and Allie Stephens each started a game with Evans having the better outing, allowing one earned run on five hits for a 1.40 ERA. Stephens allowed seven earned on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work.

The Comets will travel to Howard Payne next week following their three game series with LC.

Louisiana College 0-2

The Wildcats did not play to their potential in the series opener at Millsaps at the beginning of February. Seven defensive errors in two games, combined with six total hits cost LC both games of the season opener series. That was more than two weeks ago, and the team has had time to work on many of the things that plagued them against the Majors.

Sophomore Sami Walters was the only Wildcats with more than one hit in the doubleheader with Millsaps, both of them going for extra bases on a double and a triple. Leadoff batter Shelby Bergeron had some good at-bats, drawing two walks, but only picked up one hit in the series, but was able to steal three bases. Catcher Haley Vezinat had the teams only RBI of the series, on a single up the middle late in game two.

In the circle for the Wildcats, both Savannah Settle and, making her LC pitching debut, Cameron Crochet threw more than 4.1 innings. Settle allowed seven runs total, but only two of them were earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts. Crochet made two relief appearances going a total of 4.1 innings allowed four runs, only two earned, on five hits.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play three games at UT Dallas on Saturday and Sunday before heading to Birmingham, Ala for a doubleheader against Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday of next week. LC will host the University of the Ozarks in, what is now, their ASC home opening series on March 2-3 at Wildcat Park.
