Costly Turnovers Lead to Loss

After a strong opening quarter the Louisiana College women could not keep pace with Trinity University on Sunday evening. A total of 24 Wildcat turnovers leading to 29 Trinity points led to the Wildcats 95-62 loss in the final game of their 2018 schedule. LC will look to regroup before their home opener, and return to conference play, next Thursday at H.O. West Fieldhouse.

Putting the disappointment of Saturday's overtime loss behind them, the Wildcats came out with a strong first quarter performance against a quality Trinity team. Kourtney McGhee and RyDeja McQuarn scored the first five points of the game for the Wildcats on consecutive possessions with a layup and three-pointer respectively. The rest of the quarter remained tightly contested with Trinity building a four-point lead with a minute to go. Janae Smith knocked down a trey to cut it to one before a McGhee layup with 20 seconds left put the Wildcats up 18-17 after the first.

That would be the last time the Wildcats held the lead as Trinity started the second with a 17-4 run in about five minutes of play to give themselves a 12-point lead. The Tigers would take a 45-30 advantage into the break and not take the foot off the gas pedal in the second half. A 50-32 second half led to the convincing win for the Tigers with a nearly 60 percent shooting performance in the third and fourth quarters.

The Wildcats shot 38 percent from the floor with 10 turnovers in the second half. The turnover margin was much closer in the second half, 10 for the Wildcats and eight for the Tigers, but the damage had been done in what was an otherwise statistically close game.

RyDeja McQuarn earned her first double-double of the season with 15 point and 12 rebounds, adding four assists to her score line. McGhee went for 14 point and six boards as the only other player in double digits for LC.

The Wildcat women return to action in American Southwest Conference play next Thursday as they host Concordia at H.O. West Fieldhouse with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Stay connected to Louisiana College women's basketball by following @LC_WBB on Twitter.
