Lady Wildcats Fall in OT 81-79

The Louisiana College women returned to action following the Christmas holiday on Saturday taking on Hendrix College in the Trinity University Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. It took overtime to finally decide the game between the two evenly matched teams with the Wildcats falling 81-79 to the Warriors. LC will take on tourney host Trinity Sunday evening to close their two-month road stretch.

Both teams would shoot the ball well to start the game, better than 50 percent for each in the first quarter with Hendrix taking a seven-point lead on a couple of occasions late but a jumper at the buzzer from Kourtney McGhee made it a 26-21 game after the first quarter. The lead stayed with Hendrix for the majority of the second but the Wildcats were never too far off the pace. A long ball from Janae Smith put the Wildcats on top 39-38 with 1:13 left in the half, their first lead of the second quarter. The Warriors scored the last five points of the half though and led 43-39 after the first half.

LC came out strong in the third quarter, scoring the first nine points of the frame to go back on top 48-43, three minutes into the half. Hendrix answered the run and the back and forth play that would define the second half began. An 8-0 run late in the quarter gave the Wildcats their biggest lead of the half at 59-52.

In the fourth the teams combined for four lead changes and three ties with a trey from Hendrix with 44 seconds to go tied things at 77. The Wildcats would get two chances to win the game in regulation after a missed shot and offensive rebound but neither would fall, while the Warriors' lone chance to win at the buzzer bounced off the rim sending the game to extra time.

Neither offense looked ready to win the game through the first three minutes of the overtime period. Six missed shots and six turnovers between the teams left the game at 77 until a foul sent Hendrix to the free throw line for the first point of the period with 2:27 to go. Despite LC going 1-for-8 from the floor in the overtime period, the Wildcats had a chance to win with a final shot. After a missed Hendrix free throw and a timeout with 12 seconds left, the Wildcats played for the win setting up RyDeja McQuarn for the three from the right wing. The shot was just off the mark as the buzzer sounded ending the game for Hendrix at 81-19.

McGhee led all scorers with 26 points with Janae Smith putting in 18 along with six rebounds. Alexis Lege matched a career high with 11 points, adding five rebounds to her line. The Wildcats take on Trinity on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. to close out their 2018 schedule of games.
