Wildcats Win Again 70-60

The Louisiana College men completed their first American Southwest Conference weekend with two wins as they picked up the 70-60 victory over McMurry University on Saturday afternoon. A 60 percent second half shooting performance and another double-double from big man Devon Washington helped the Wildcats secure their fifth win in a row on the season. LC will take on Howard Payne University on December 13 after a week off for final exams.

The presence of Devon Washington around the basket proved to be a struggle for the McMurry defense from the very beginning of the game. Washington scored the first five points of the game before the Wildcats went cold from the field for more than eight minutes of game time that allowed McMurry to take a 19-6 lead in the game.

Back-to-back long balls from Lashard Powell and Jacquez Coleman ignited the Wildcat offense as they erased the 13-point deficit in a matter of minutes to take the 22-21 lead after another long ball from Kae'ron Baker and two free throws from Trey Ames. Over the final 10 minutes of the first half the Wildcats outscored McMurry 23-12 to take the slim 32-31 lead into the break.

The Wildcats came out of the half hot with a quick 7-0 run that included a pair of layups from Washington and another from Baker. A long ball from Baker at the 12:15 mark of the second half put the Wildcats up by double-digits at  46-36. The Wildcats held as much as a 13-point advantage on three different occasions the rest of the way with McMurry only getting within six points the remainder of the game.

Washington finished with his second double-double of the weekend, scoring 16 of his 23 total points in the game in the second half. He pulled down 10 rebounds, five each on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Baker picked up his third double-digit scoring effort of the season for the Wildcats while Lashard Powell earned his fourth.

The Wildcats will have the week off for final exams on campus before heading back on the road for another ASC series at Howard Payne and Sul Ross State University.
