HSU Pulls Away Late for Win

The Louisiana College women's basketball team opened American Southwest Conference play on Thursday night with their first of two games in the city of Abilene, Texas this weekend. After a hard-fought battle throughout the night, it was Hardin-Simmons that used a huge fourth quarter effort to pull away for the 79-60 win over the Wildcats. LC will take on the other Abilene based ASC team, McMurry University, on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.

The Cowgirls started out strong in the first, taking an 8-2 lead less than a minute into the game, but the Wildcats quickly erased the deficit and took a 9-8 lead after a pair of free throws from Kourtney McGhee just before the midway point of the quarter. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way and a late set of free throws cut the LC lead down to one after the first at 20-19.

A 12-2 stretch to start the second quarter for HSU put them up 31-22 with 4:21 left in the half, but once again LC would make their way back in the game. A jumper by RyDeja McQuarn with 1:20 to go cut the lead down to four, but HSU score back-to-back shots to answer before McGhee found the final shot of the half, a three-ball that made it 37-32 Cowgirls at the halftime break.

Five quick points to start third for LC, another trey from McGhee and a layup from Jayla Landrum, tied the game at 37 just seconds into the half. The rest of the third played out on an even scale as neither team held the lead for any extended time or by more than four points at a time. The third ended with jumpers from both teams in the final 24 seconds and set things to the fourth with HSU ahead 55-51.

The Cowgirls found their stroke right away in the fourth with 10 straight points to make it a 65-51 game with 6:46 left in the contest. It would be a lead the Wildcats would not be able to erase this time however as a nine missed shots and eight turnovers in the fourth quarter alone doomed the Cats.

McGhee recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Jayla Landrum added 11 points with six rebounds. LC will take on McMurry on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm in Abilene.
