Lady Wildcats Get First ASC Win



The Louisiana College women engaged in a battle that came down to the final minute on Saturday afternoon against the struggling McMurry University War Hawks. The Wildcats trailed by one with less than a minute remaining but seniors Kourtney McGhee and Janae Smith willed the Cats to pull out the 73-67 win, their first in the American Southwest Conference this season.
 
The first 10 minutes of Saturday's game set the stage for what would be a tightly contested matchup all afternoon. The Wildcats trailed for just 13 seconds very early in the game but never gained more than a two-possession lead in that opening frame. The second quarter though belonged primarily to the home team. The Wildcats maintained their slim lead through the first five minutes of the second quarter. A 16-6 stretch by the War Hawks over just a three-minute span of game time gave McMurry a 37-30 lead. Chelsea Singleton ended the scoring for the half with a layup that put LC back within two possessions at the half 37-32.
 
McMurry continued their solid play early in the second half, stretching their lead to double digits at 46-36 just less than four minutes into the third. After a bit of a scoring drought from both teams, the Wildcats started to work their way back towards the lead. The trio of senior guards for the Wildcats took over the final minutes of the third with McGhee, Smith, and RyDeja McQuarn scoring all 12 of the Wildcats' points that put them ahead 48-47 entering the fourth quarter.
 
LC held the slim lead through most of the fourth but could never put enough space between themselves and the War Hawks to seal the win. McMurry continued to hang around and eventually put together a quick stretch that saw them back in the lead with 1:35 left in the game. After a McGhee layup put LC back on top and a pair of free throws from McM earned the lead back seconds later, the Wildcats would finally seal the win on the shoulders of Smith and McGhee. A key and-1 play from McGhee answered the lead back to the Wildcats then Smith ended things with four clutch free throws that secured the ASC win.
 
Four players scored in double figures for the Wildcats in the game including all three senior guards and junior forward Kristen Breaux. The Wildcats play an exhibition game December 10 at Southern University for their next contest before taking on Howard Payne University on December 13.
