Wildcats Win Battle with Cowboys

In a game that almost slipped through their fingers, the Louisiana College men's basketball team found a way to pull out an 85-80 win on the road at Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday night. The Wildcats saw an early 15-point second half lead disappear later but clutch free throws late helped LC pick up their fourth straight win of the season. LC will take on McMurry University on Saturday afternoon.

A three-pointer from Travis Schultz at the 15:36 mark tied the game at 11 and started the Wildcats on an 8-0 run that put them up by five. LC had as much as a seven point advantage through the next seven minutes of play but HSU erased that in a matter or 40 seconds to tie the game at 24 with eight minutes to go in the first half.

A pair of three-balls from Jacquez Coleman and Jase Miguez later in the half put the Wildcats back up by five at 35-30 with 4:48 remaining. Rex Hollis knocked down a transition three to maintain LC's five-point advantage with 40 seconds left, and following a Cowboy free throw, Timothy Stokes closed the half with a layup to end things with the Wildcats up 41-35 at the break.

After the Cowboys got within a basket early in the second half, the Wildcats went on a run that appeared as if would put the game away. Thirteen straight points by the Wildcats made the game 54-39 at the 14:25 mark of the second half. Kae'ron Baker accounted for the bulk of the offense during the run with six points total during the stretch. The lead maintained their lead in double figures until near the midway point of the half as HSU slowly chipped away at the Wildcat advantage.

A 12-2 run by HSU erased the Wildcat lead and put the home team on top 71-70 after a pair of free throws with just under four minutes left in the game. The lead changed hands six times over the next three minutes of play but a Devon Washington and-1 play immediately following a Cowboy three on the other end put the lead back in the Wildcats' hands for the final time. HSU missed a free throw that would have tied things on their next possession and Denzel Austin made them pay by knocking down two courtesy shots with 23 seconds left to all but secure the road victory.

Washington was a dominant force around the basket on both ends of the floor recording his second 30-point game as a Wildcat and his second double-double of the season. Twelve total players scored for LC in the game with Baker the only other Wildcat in double figures on the night.

The Wildcats will take on McMurry on Saturday afternoon to close out their Abilene trip. Stay connected to Louisiana College men's basketball by following @LC_MBSK on Twitter or like Louisiana College Wildcats on Facebook.
