Lady Wildcats Fall to Piedmont 79-61

The Louisiana College women's basketball team took on Piedmont College on Saturday evening in game two of the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic in Salem, Va. A slow first half put the Wildcats behind a 25 percent field goal percentage that there were not able to overcome, falling 79-61 in the game. LC will take on Wesleyan College Sunday afternoon to complete their first weekend of competition.

The teams were evenly matched through the first five minutes of the opening quarter with LC taking the 11-10 lead on a free throw from Kristen Breaux. Piedmont would respond to take the lead on the next possession, one they would only surrender once more the rest of the night. Morgan Blades landed a three-ball with a minute left in the first that cut the lead back to three points but a late foul sent Piedmont to the line and they took a 22-18 lead into the second quarter.

Points were at a premium in the second 10-minute period with a combined 15 points scored between the two teams. Alexis Lege tied the game at 22 early in the second with back-to-back jumpers but LC would only score four points over the next nine minutes and fail to take back the momentum, but were still only down 29-26 at the half time break.

Early in the third the Wildcats found their shooting hand and went back on top as Blades knocked down another long ball giving LC the 35-33 lead but Piedmont would seize the control on a 16-2 run that put them up 49-37 with two minutes left in the third quarter. Down by 10 to start the final period the Wildcat would work their way back to within two possessions with a 7-0 run capped off by Jayla Landrum's trey with 4:26 remaining. The Wildcats would go cold from the floor the rest of the way going just 2-for-9 from the field over the final four minutes of the game.

Seniors Kourtney McGhee and Janae Smith each finished with double-digit points while sophomore Alexis Lege earned her first double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
