Wildcats Escape with 61-58 Victory

In a tightly contested game where neither team enjoyed more than a eight point lead all night, it was the Louisiana College men that got the clutch basket and took advantage of a costly Centenary mistake to escape with a 61-58 road win on Thursday night. The Wildcats travel to Memphis, Tenn for a pair of games at Rhodes College this weekend.

The Wildcats came out of the gate hot with an 8-0 run with Kae'ron Baker opening the game with a layup and knocking down a three after a slew of missed shots from both teams three minutes later. It took nearly six minutes before the Gents got on the scoreboard but they erased the lead with an 9-0 run to take the lead at the midway point of the half. It was a lead they would hold the majority of the final 10 minutes of play until a run of seven points from K.D. Wallace and Lashard Powell put the Wildcats up 26-22 with 90 seconds left. A pair of layups from the Gents in the final minute, with no answer from the Wildcats, sent the game to half tied at 26.

Devon Washington and Powell put LC back up to start the second half with a pair of layups but the game would not stay in the Wildcats' grasp as they had hoped it would. A Jaylen Rhone long ball gave the Wildcats back their biggest lead of the night at 41-33 with 12:32 left, but once again Centenary would erase the eight-point advantage. LC held the Gents from the lead until a layup made it a one-point game with 2:47 left and just minutes later a three-ball tied the game at 58 with under a minute to go.

On the next possession, Powell got a perfect bounce pass as he cut towards the basket and got the shooters roll off the rim to put the Wildcats back up by a pair with 30 seconds left in the game. After a timeout by Centenary to draw up their play, a miscommunication led to an errant pass and a turnover eight seconds later. A foul and a made free throw from Denzel Austin gave LC the three-point lead that forced a long shot from the Gents that fell short and gave the Wildcats their first win of the season.

Both Washington and Rhone scored in double figures for the second time this year with a combined 11-for-17 shooting clip on the night and 15 rebounds.

The Wildcats travel to Rhodes College this weekend for a matchup with the Lynx on Saturday and another game on Sunday against an opponent yet to be determined.
