Lady Wildcats Suffer Tough Defeat in Longview

The Louisiana College volleyball team made the relatively short trip to Longview, Texas on Friday for a pair of matches against American Southwest Conference foe LeTourneau University and a non-conference affair with the University of Dallas. The Wildcats dropped both matches of the day 3-0 to LeTourneau and 3-1 to Dallas. LC travels to East Texas Baptist University for a match Saturday afternoon to close out the week's schedule.

LC vs LeTourneau

In a pivotal match for the Wildcats in terms of conference tournament potential, LC knew they had to come with their best performance to try and earn a season split against LeTourneau. In three closely fought sets LC would come up short each time, despite have late leads in both the first and third sets. A 9-1 stretch in the first set the tone for the LETU as they jumped ahead 13-17. The Wildcats, as they continually do, never quit pulling back even with the Yellow Jackets at 21 on back-to-back kills from Paola Salas Adorno. An ace and two LC errors though gave LETU the edge they needed in the first to take the 25-23 victory.

LC took an early lead in the second 9-6, but LeTourneau rallied back to go ahead 14-11 and held their three point margin the majority of the rest of the set. More attack errors hurt the Wildcats late in the set that pushed the LETU lead to 23-17. Jaslyn Bright and Niajia Huval provided a late spark of offense but the effort was not enough to overcome and LETU took the second 25-20 and a 2-0 match lead.

With their backs against the wall the Wildcats came out strong in the third set and led from the first point of the frame on a kill from Bight. The advantage reached as much as four, midway through the set with the Wildcats holding on until the 21-19 mark when LETU began to turn the tables. Three straight kills and a service ace put the home team up 23-21 with the momentum. Adorno picked up her 18thkill of the match before things were decided but an LC service and attack error on back-to-back plays ended the match in LeTourneau's favor.

Adorno had far and away the best hitting performance in program history with 18 total kills in the match with just one error and 25 attempts for a .680 attack percentage. The effort was the fifth time she has recorded 15 or more kills in a match over the last two weeks of play.

LC vs Univ. of Dallas

In the first set of the second match of the day the Wildcats carried the momentum from their first match of the day and went up 8-4 on Dallas. A 4-0 run just a few moments later changed the lead into the hands of Dallas and after tying the set at 15 shortly after the Wildcats momentum faded quickly. Dallas ended the first with a 10-1 run to take the 1-0 match lead with the 25-16 set win.

The Wildcats steadied themselves for the second and once again had an early lead of 10-8. After a kill by Adorno gave the Wildcats back the lead at 19-18, it was once again another lengthy run by Dallas that sealed the fate of the Cats. Three Dallas kills and a pair of LC attack errors gave Dallas set point at 24-19 which they eventually put away on another LC error. The third set was tied at 11 before the Wildcats had a 4-1 swing with kills from Paris Babino and Said Jones with two aces from Niajia Huval gave LC a three-point lead. The set was tied later at 18 when the Wildcats put together another critical stretch that helped them secure the set victory. Two more kills from Adorno and a pair of attack errors from Dallas put LC up 23-19. Three straight points a little later gave the Wildcats the set win with the final kills coming from Darian Pate and Jaslyn Bright.

The final set got away from the Wildcats after a 4-0 run only got them back within a handful at 14-9. A 10-0 run by Dallas gave them match point quickly and they were able to secure the match win a few moments later to give the Wildcats their second loss of the day.
