The Louisiana College Wildcats concluded their final home game of the season Saturday afternoon against American Southwest Conference rival East Texas Baptist University. A penalty kick in the 67th minute was the difference between the two to finish 1-0. The Cats travel to the University of Texas at Tyler and the University of the Ozarks next week for the final two games of the year, needing positive results to make it into the conference playoffs.
The Cats were the more aggressive side throughout the game. Outshooting the Tigers 14 to eight and placing two more shots on goal (4) and controlling the majority of the game. The Cats struggled to keep their shots on frame, only having one shot between the posts in the first half.
In the second half, LC had their shooting shoes on and fired off two goal-ward shots by
Ian Carter and
Gavin Albe within four minutes after the restart. In the 57th minute,
Gabriel G. Lopes nearly took the lead after striking the woodwork off a set piece 25 yards from goal.
LC was riding high, but in the 67th minute, ETBU would be on top. A foul in the box by an LC player gave ETBU a penalty kick and later converted the chance to take a 1-0 lead.
In the dying moments of the game and LC's last chance, a foul was given inches from the edge of the 18-yard box. Lopes and
Victor Pimenta both stood over the ball, but Pimenta took the shot and unfortunately hit the crossbar. The Tigers defended the remaining seconds with everything, holding on to win the game 1-0.
Next week, LC travels to the University of Texas at Tyler, and then to the University of the Ozarks to play for their final two ASC and season games Thursday and Saturday afternoon.
