Wildcats Fall in Battle with Lobos

The Louisiana College volleyball team began play in their second American Southwest Conference crossover event of the season on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats engaged in a five-set, back-and-forth thriller with Sul Ross State University that ended in a 3-2 decision against LC. The Wildcats take on the two Abilene schools tomorrow to finish play in the final crossover of the season.

The Wildcats came out with one of their best opening sets of the season taking a quick 8-1 lead with kills from Paola Salas Adorno, Jaslyn Bright, and I'Nyah Kately to help the cause. The Wildcat dominance continued the rest of the set as seven Lobo errors and 12 total kills from LC and a .440 hitting percentage led to the convincing 25-12 set victory. A pair of kills from Adorno and Bright near the end of the match settled things in the Wildcats favor and Sul Ross ended the first with a service error.

The momentum though would quickly fade for LC as the next four sets were much more tightly contested, especially the third and fourth sets that ended in a 29-27 score both times. The Wildcats dropped the second set 25-18 with eight errors and a much lower .065 hitting percentage in the set.

In the third it was the Wildcats that held the lead through the majority of the run of play, getting as much as a 15-11 advantage midway through the frame. After a service error by the Lobos and a Sadi Jones block the Wildcats were just two points from taking the 2-1 match lead at 23-19 but four straight LC errors allowed Sul Ross to climb back up and push the set beyond the 25-point mark. After trading points back and forth four times Sul Ross finally strung together two in a row on two kills to take the third 29-27.

The back-and-forth play continued all through the fourth set, but it was still the Wildcats that maintained the lead through the majority of the play. The Lobos would continue to hang around and eventually work their way to a match point at 24-22. LC benefited from a service error than found a kill from Bright to push the fourth past the 25-point mark. Back-to-back kills form Adorno gave the Wildcats a set point at 27-26, but they were not able to put things away just yet. It wasn't until a few serves later that Adorno added another kill and Sul Ross hit the ball into the net that the Wildcats would take the 29-27 fourth to even the match a two sets each.

With their energy drained after playing with their backs against the wall for a long fourth set the Wildcats seemed to run out of gas in the fifth. Although they battled through and held a lead early in the final frame, the Sul Ross attack would be too much for the Wildcats to overcome as they took the fifth 15-12 to win the match.

In the match four Wildcats had more than 10 kills in a match, Adorno (19), Bright (12), Jones (12), and Niajia Huval (11) marking the first time in school history four players recorded 10 or more kills in a single match.

LC will take on Hardin-Simmons and McMurry on Saturday afternoon at the UT Dallas Activity Center in the final day of the second ASC Crossover. They then play a midweek match at Belhaven on Tuesday before returning to H.O. West Fieldhouse for their final two games of the season next Friday and Saturday.
