Wildcats Need W to Stay in Hunt

1/31/2018 11:42:00 AM

Although not a final blow, the loss that the Louisiana College men's basketball team suffered last Saturday to the University of Texas at Dallas did not help the Wildcats postseason hopes. With just six games left in the season, all of them on their home floor, the Wildcats sit 4.0 games behind UT Tyler for the final tournament spot out of the East Division. The Wildcats will have to put together a run similar to the one they had last season if they have hopes of returning to the ASC tournament at the end of February.

UT Dallas  13-6 (9-3)  |  3rd ASC East

UTD have now one four games in a row after last Saturday's victory over the Wildcats and just one game behind the two teams, ETBU and LeTourneau, that sit atop the East standings. The Comet men, like the women's team, rely on their defense to carry them through games, holding opponents to a league low 70.3 points per game. They have three players scoring double figures each game on the season, with sophomore Dimitrius Underwood leading the way at 17.0 per game. He is in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding in the conference, one of five players ranking that high in both categories.

Louisiana College  4-13 (2-10)  |  5th ASC East

The Wildcats have work to do, as well as needing help along the way, if they hope to make it back to the ASC tournament. While the defense, a staple under Coach Reni Mason, has been great through the season, ranking third in the ASC, it has been the offense that has been left to be desired. The trio of Devon Washington, Taylan Grogan, and Lashard Powell have been the most consistent scorers for LC, all averaging double digits on the year, but falling short late in games. Washington has been a force around the basket with 15.5 points per game along with 8.4 rebounds and a 64.4 field goal percentage. As a team LC is scoring 73.5 points per game, 11th in the conference.

The Wildcats begin their stretch of the last six games of the regular season, all on their home floor. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night, following the women's game, at Rapides Coliseum with live stats and video available via the links provided above.
