1/22/2018 11:03:00 PM

Box Score

The Louisiana College men's basketball team got a much-needed win on Monday night as they took down Belhaven University 70-65. The Wildcats made up for their season low 53.3 percent free throw with a season best 51.9 field goal percentage. The victory is the second in American Southwest Conference play over the last four contests.

From the beginning of the game the Wildcats stuck to their methodical offensive game plan that compliments their tough defensive stance. Down 5-4 in the early stages of the game, the Wildcats went on an 8-0 run that gave them 12-5 lead on the Blazers at the 13:43 mark of the first half. That would be the final lead change of the game as the Wildcats held their advantage the rest of the way, but were not able to run away with the game.

LC took just 29 shots in the first half, making 15 of them, for a 51.7 field goal percentage. The Wildcats also committed 15 fouls in the first half, sending the Blazers to the free throw line 17 times in the first half, with them making 13 of them, keeping them close in the game. Thanks to stingy defense by the Wildcats and a 26.9 shooting percentage from the Blazers the game fell into the Wildcats hands.

The Blazers made a couple of pushes to try and gain the lead in the second half, getting within three points at the seven minute mark and then again with just under two minutes left. A three-pointer by Jaquez Coleman with 51 seconds left put the Wildcats back up by seven. Late free throws from Trey Ames and Travis Schultz sealed the game for the Wilcats and their second conference win.

Devon Washington had his 14th double-digit performance of the season with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Freshman Lashard Powell turned in his eighth straight double-digit game with 13 points as the Wildcats top scorers on a balanced offensive night.

LC will play their final road contest of the season this weekend as they take on the University of Texas at Dallas at 4 p.m. in Richardson, Texas. The Wildcats play their final six games of the season at home as they try and battle their way into a tournament spot.
