Wildcats Begin Conference Tournament

The Louisiana College Lady Wildcats softball team will make its 14th American Southwest Conference tournament appearance on Thursday as the No. 5 seed in this year's tournament, and take on No. 4 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first game. LC is making its sixth appearance in a row and has an overall record of 34-20 in ASC postseason play, is a four-time runner-up, and a three-time champion, most recently in 2010.

The Wildcats will take on UMHB in the second game of the opening day, starting at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. LC finished the regular season at 24-15 overall and 18-12 in ASC play to claim the No. 5 seed. They finished 10.0 games behind conference regular season champion, and tournament host University of Texas at Tyler and just 2.0 games behind their Thursday opponent UMHB. UTT finished as the 2016 ASC runner up after losing to East Texas Baptist in the championship game, but went on to win the NCAA Division III Softball National Championship.

The Cru are 26-14 overall and 20-10 in conference play this year, and lost their last two games of the season to Belhaven last weekend. Before that, they rode a nine game winning streak dating back to the series at the end of March in Pineville. In the lone three game series between the Cru and the Wildcats, UMHB took two out of three from the Wildcats, winning the last two games of the series.

In the series, the Wildcats won the first game over the Cru, behind Savannah Settle's first career perfect game. LC scored on a Cameron Crochet single in the bottom of the second, and Settle continued to dominate the Cru. She retired 21 batters in a row from the first inning to the end of the game, striking out the final batter of the game. The Cru won the next two games, which became the first two games of the Wildcats current 11 game losing streak.

The ASC Tournament is a double-elimination format over three days. The winner of the LC/UMHB game Thursday afternoon will advance to play tournament host UT Tyler that evening at 7 p.m. The loser will play in an elimination game against the loser of the Texas-Dallas/Concordia game from Thursday. The championship game will be played Saturday at 5 p.m. with an if needed game scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

Admission is $5 adults, $3 students, senior citizens. Tickets will be available at Suddenlink Field.
