4/22/2017 3:54:00 PM

Box Score

A six run third inning proved to be the downfall of the Louisiana College softball team on the final day of the 2017 regular season. The University of Texas at Dallas scored six times on six hits and two wild pitches to secure the 7-0 win over the Wildcats, shutting them out for the second game in a row. LC finishes the regular season at 24-15 overall and 18-12 in conference play and will enter the American Southwest Conference tournament as the No. 5 seed and play on Thursday afternoon in Tyler, TX.

The Comets took the early lead in the game on a 1-out double to right center field to take the 1-0 lead in the first. Starting pitcher Chelsea Lewis got the next two batters to end the inning, and retired the side in order in the bottom of the second but after an RBI ground out that gave the Wildcats 2-out in the third and a 2-0 deficit. The Comets then got three straight hits, including a home run to knock Lewis out of the game.

Relief pitcher Taylor Leger gave up a hit to the first batter she face to load the bases, which was followed by a double to left center field to score two more runs and put runners at second and third. UTD added two more runs to their 5-0 lead on two wild pitches in the same at-bat before the Wildcats made another pitching change, bringing in Savannah Settle.

The Wildcats only managed three hits for the rest of the game, two of them coming in the top of the fourth, but could only get a runner to second base as the inning came to an end. Freshman Taylor Hammock went 2-for-3 in the game, getting two of the Wildcats four hits in the game. Sami Walters and Mattie Stine each had one hit.

Chelsea Lewis suffered the loss, going 2.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Taylor Leger face three batters, allowed two runs on two hits, and Savannah Settle pitched the final 3.1 innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out another.

The Wildcats now turn their focus to the American Southwest Conference tournament that begins on next Thursday in Tyler, Texas at the host site of the University of Texas at Tyler. The Wildcats will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will play the No. 4 seed in the opening round, which will likely be the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
