Softball Returns to ASC Play vs UMHB

The Louisiana College Wildcats streak of 19 wins in a row was ended on Monday night with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Birmingham-Southern College. This weekend the Wildcats will return to American Southwest Conference play against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor looking the extend their current 16-game conference winning streak. The home series is against the Cru is scheduled for a doubleheader Friday beginning at 4 p.m. and end with a single game Saturday starting at 12 p.m.

3358The Cru make their way to Pineville, winners of three games in a row and seven of their last nine overall. They have won seven ASC games in a row including back-to-back conference sweeps over the Ozarks and Concordia. UMHB is third in the ASC in team batting and home runs with a .349 average and 18 home runs. They are averaging 7.6 runs per game and 10.2 hits per outing. Makenzi Dawson leads the team with a .408 batting average with a team-high 42 hits and 38 runs scored. All-American Leah Brown comes in with a .356 batting average with four home runs, 31 runs batted in and 24 runs scored.

In the circle, the Cru have a 5.55 team earned run average, allowing 5.9 runs per game with a .310 opponents batting average. Karen Tennis leads the team with a 3.55 ERA this season in 73.0 innings of work. She has allowed 52 runs on 88 hits this season with 31 strikeouts and opponents are batting .292 against her. Their two other main pitchers each have over a 5.10 ERA on the year with .300 plus opponents batting average.

5201Although the Wildcats long winning streak was snapped earlier in the week, LC still sits in first place in the competitive ASC, with four teams ranked in the NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Over the next four series, the Wildcats will play the four teams directly behind them in the standings. Despite the losses, LC still tops the conference in pitching with a 1.30 team earned run average. They lead the ASC in strikeouts, fewest earned runs and walks, and tied for the least amount of runs scored this year. Savannah Settle has gotten better and better as the season has progressed including a 30 strikeout, 16.0 inning,  3-0 series against LeTourneau last week.

Mattie Stine leads the LC offense with a .412 batting average with team highs in hits (35), doubles (10), RBI (26) and walks (12). The two batters in front of her in the lineup, Shelby Bergeron and Sami Walters, have been a big part of Sine's offensive numbers. Both have 33 hits on the season, tied for second most on the team and the two have scored a total of 52 runs for LC this season. They are also a combined 35-40 in stolen base attempts and Bergeron needs 10 more steal to break the school record for steals in a season. The first five batters in the LC order are all hitting over .350 on the season and the Wildcats rank sixth in the conference in team batting.
